Just had an email that our TomTom will no longer be able to receive map updates so want to buy a new device.

Looking for something that can use the PGPSW camera database and has voice warnings with the speed rating of the camera not just a bing bong.

What would people recommend?

Or would I be better off getting something for my smartphone (Android)

Garmin.Very Happy
Newer TomToms don't support user POIs in the way that you would want the PGPSW camera database to work. i.e. proximity alerts. It would appear that they want to sell you their offering.

You could use the PGPSW CamerAlert app on your android phone for either background or foreground alerts (free if you already subscribe to PGPSW). Not sure whether the Android TomTom offering is any good or not for what you want though.

The only function other than safety camera warnings we used on the TT was the traffic avoidance so would like to try and get a device that offers that.

Which of the Garmin would you recommend?

Budget is up to £200

If you get one with the suffix LM-TD this included lifetime maps and digital traffic. The LM versions do not have traffic.
Other than that, Garmin experts heeeellllp

NO NEED TO REPLACE THE 550! One of the best they made and far far better than any of their new ones.

TomTom will happily take your money and continue to supply the Live Traffic service, so there's no need to waste your money on a replacement when you're satisfied with the one you've got. I presume you have a recent map and that'll do for a long time into the future (the other day we heard of someone who hasn't updated his map since 10 years ago - sure, he's now missing a few new roads, but he hasn't got lost or driven over a cliff). And you already know how your 550 works. No brainer.

The last map according to the email is the 15th of November, and as long as we can continue to get the Live Traffic, yeah I have no problem sticking with an older map & device, neither has failed us over the years.

TomTom really don't help themselves do they.

What Dennis said.

I also see no real need to update maps that aren't free. Sure, a few roads change here and there but not that much.

And when they do, it's often major roads and you just find yourself tracking across a field on your satnav, when there is little chance of getting lost.

Speak for yourself, I get lost nearly every time I drive through a field, especially if it's full of elephant grass.
