A freedom of information request by the Sun newspaper has revealed the top 10 speed camera systems in the UK.

The figures were collated from the last three years and show that almost 300,000 speeding drivers have been caught with possible resultant revenue of up to £30million from fines and speed awareness courses.

The UK's most lucrative speed cameras:
1: A10 Great Cambridge Road, Cheshunt: 38,206
2: A140 Mile End Road, Norwich: 34,775
3: A1 Barrowby Thorns, Lincolnshire: 34,555
4: A1134 Elizabeth Way, Cambridge: 33,429
5: A4161 Newport Road, Cardiff: 32,855
6: A28 Pin Hill, Canterbury: 25,069
7: A412 Rickmansworth Rd, Watford: 23,595
8: A16 Peak Parkway, Grimbsy: 23,578
9: M20 (junction 4 to 7), Maidstone: 23,122
10: A15 Snitterby, Lincolnshire: 22,483

A spokesman for the RAC commented: "The whole point of installing a safety camera must be to improve road safety, often at high risk locations. Any camera that is raking in cash cannot be doing its job."

He added: "Councils should be looking at the number of penalty notices issued, and where that number looks high, they should be urgently finding a better solution that actually works to promote road safety."

It's all relative, innit? 38,206 over 3 years is 35 per day. How many cars pass those 2 cameras per day? Does 35 speeders per day look too high?

And I'm assuming "M20 (junction 4 to 7), Maidstone: 23,122" is a stretch of SPECS. Is 21 speeders per day there a lot?

Numbers of speeders caught with no context doesn't tell the whole story. Lies, damned lies, etc.

The M20 has Gatsos as far as I remember. It probably catches people who are late for the ferry/tunnel.

By the simple expedient of looking at the submission map, they are the variable speed cams between 4 and 7.

Do you think I could buy some shares in the speed camera operations?

Having bought some shares you can then deliberately trigger every speed camera you see so you can increase your profits. Hang on a minute though.....I may not have thought this through!

You'd be better off buying shares in the companies that produce the speed camera systems.

Nah. There's more money in the fines - remember, although they are not installed for financial reasons, they do pay for themselves. Repeat income, not a one-off charge.

That's why I'm surprised they don't have more unmarked traffic cars. They would surely pay for themselves.

Round my way what with heavily tinted front windows and illegal number plates not to mention driving without due care, etc.
