Just one new speed camera has clocked 48,000 speeding drivers in 40 days.

The camera, that uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology, has monitored over half a million vehicles passing in both directions through a 30mph stretch of road.

Nine per cent of those vehicles were travelling above the speed limit at 35mph or more.

The yellow camera, which is smaller than a traditional speed camera, is situated on a telephone pole on the A46 Bath Road, in Rodborough, Gloucestershire.

During this pilot period, persistent speeders only receive a warning letter and not a £100 fine or points on their licence. The police however visit the worst offenders.

A spokesman for the Road Safety Working Group which works in partnership with Gloucestershire's Police and Crime Commissioner commented: "These figures are absolutely shocking. On average, every day around 1200 vehicles drive through this busy residential area at 35mph or higher – this is incredibly dangerous for cyclists, pedestrians and children."

He added: "We have calculated that if all those caught speeding had received the standard £100 fine then it would have totalled 4.8 million in penalties. If you factor these same statistics over one year it would reach an incredible £44 million."

A local councillor said "We have been monitoring the data for over a month now and have already seen a dramatic fall in people travelling at over 35mph."

I know this isn't active yet, but is it worth adding it to the database now? The photograph and Google map in the article allow it to be pinpointed accurately.

Google street view doesn't show the camera but does show the pole, road sign and houses from the photograph in the article.

We most likely will as it could be activated at any time.

Now there's an interesting item - "Reversible", should we call it?

Actually, it seems it already IS activated, but at present only resulting in letters and visits, not points and fines.

I wonder if it actually means that it doesn't need to be reversed (it's very high up on that pole) and that it can "clock" vehicles travelling towards or away from this new type of camera?

Gatsos can do that, but are usually programmed to trap from the rear. I suspect if there is no big flash that goes off, then they will possibly be used in both directions if suitably positioned.

OK, whilst there was allegedly 48,000 speeders and persistent speeders received a warning letter - that doesn't mean that 48,000 letters were sent out. However some letters must have been sent out.

So, has anybody here, received a letter?

Also, I can't identify the so called camera. Does anybody know the technology it uses, i.e. radar, laser, average speed zone? As ANPR on its own can't detect speed.

Regards,
