Hi Folks,

Can anyone recommend a decent dashcam (front-facing only) which also supports speed camera detection? I've seen some info on the RAC 05 and 07s. Are there alternatives out there, that also use the packetgpsworld database?

I don't need any of the lane departure or collision detection features, but a decent dashcam picture quality is a must. I'll only run it from the switched supply (to avoid any battery drain issues) so I really like the sound of the RAC 05, if it can record 'incidents' when parked, running from its own internal battery.

Thanks !!

Garmin do a combined dashcam/GPS. I had a look at one in Halfords this morning. They are a bit big.

Thanks.

Maybe their Dashcam 35 ? Looks about the same size as the RAC one.

Garmin Dashcam 35
(WxHxD): 9.43cm x 4.85cm x 3.89cm

RAC 05
(WxHxD): 10.0cm x 5.00cm x 3.00cm

I'll need to check whether the Garmin one has a built-in battery ...

The one I saw was much longer than 4 inches. It looked like it had a 6" display, but I didn't look that hard.

Hmm, ok, that sounds more like a sat-nav (which I don't need).

Anway, I found a review of the Garmin ...

http://www.trustedreviews.com/garmin-dash-cam-35-review

... which seems to favour the RAC 05. And the £17 a year is a big turn-off, given that the RAC one comes with a lifetime subscription for free.

Lifetime, I've heard that before. Novus, I'm looking at you. Grrr

I'm hanging on for the new Drive Assist 50 LMT-D and I want to see the included cable myself.

Looking at the 'what's in the box' it's looking like it may be a TA cable job as it says Power/Antenna cable.

Not getting too excited though.

I was just given a confusing reply that contadicted itself.

I was told no dash cams were compatible with PGPSW database... then told the RAC05 uses it!

Can someone please explain.

The coversation was then locked... is this a mute subject around here?

Not at all, just that there's possibly confusion in terminology. Read again what was written Wink

I agree, the reply was just a little short on precise information.

The RAC 05 comes with the PGPSW database pre-installed. It is not compatible with downloads from this site, but is instead updated via updates from the Proofcam web site, which may not be as up-to-date. (Proofcam sell the RAC 05).

Still not sure why a Smartphone can't be used, but each to his own.

The answer said
Quote:
uses a version of the PGPSW database
which means that the RAC obtain the PGPSW database, then convert it to whatever proprietary format the RAC05 uses and you then connect to RAC to update the database at whatever intervals they dictate. If RAC fall out with PGPSW or for any other reason decide to stop using the PGPSW database, you will be without the PGPSW database and you will NOT be able to connect the RAC05 to PGPSW and download updates, because it is NOT compatible with the PGPSW database.

The conversation was locked to prevent it developing the way your other conversation went, just meandering around when you don't seem to understand what you are told.

SIGNIFICANTLY you were advised to search the forum for RAC 05. If you did that, you'd get a multi page discussion which might have a chance of being understandable for you.

I've been using SatNav (PDAs, PNDs, smartphones) since 2003. I have been using dashcams since 2013. In addition I keep a record of all of my journeys recorded by the dashcam for a minimum of six months.

I prefer to keep the dashcam and camera warnings on separate devices. I've tried the RAC 03 and it's a reasonable dashcam but updating the database is a bit of a chore and I prefer the warnings from CamerAlert - even though both use a database from PGPSW.

I have a number of RoadHawk HD dashcams and I like them because they are unobtrusive and record a good picture. I'm currently experimenting with a RoadHawk HD-2 dashcam. The RoadHawk units also use standard sized SD cards instead of micro SD cards. I find that units with micro SD cards are very fiddly to change cards and that the micro SD cards are often launched flying when I change them.

I prefer to load the PGPSW camera database onto TomTom on my iPhone for a visual display on the navigation screen and have CamerAlert running in the background for warnings. I can update CamerAlert every day via WiFi or mobile data so I always have the up-to-date info.

Every so often (before the card is full) I change SD cards on the dashcam and then transfer the dashcam videos to a hard drive at home. When I'm on holiday I take enough SD cards to allow me to change SD cards every day plus a few extras for spares.

Regards,
