Hi I'm a newbie and an OAP that doesn't understand much about Sat Navs and was wondering if I could set my Garmin SatNav to tell me when I have reached the speed limit. Now this bit may sound a bit daft but I would like to put the SatNav in the boot of my SUV. Reason being I got caught in a speed camera doing 36mph in a 30. I know the Garmin will tell me this if I keep telling it where I am going and I don't want to keep doing this and leaving it on show as most times I know the routes but need to be reminded when I am breaking the law. I hope I'm making sense Rolling Eyes Confused Many thanks

Depending on the model, ther is a setting that alerts you to over the speed limit. On mine, it's Settings - Map & Vehicle - Audible Speed Alerts. If you find out how to do it, don't necessarily rely on it. The map speed limits are frequently different from the actual posted speed limits. It take quite a while for the map makers to catch up with a change of speed limit. And I bet you'll soon get hacked off with it. Very Happy

I don't think the Garmin overspeed bongs would be loud enough, even on 100% volume to attract your attention if the unit was anywhere else other than the front? Certainly not in the boot.

I'm an oldbie and a long-time satnav user. I have NEVER been caught in a speed camera breaking the law - BECAUSE I don't speed.

What on earth did you do before satnavs were invented? If I remember correctly, we used to have things called speedometers and speed limit signs to help us not break the law. What's wrong with NOT breaking the law?

As pointed out above, the speed limit for a given road can change and the map info is slow to reflect it. For example, a nearby road was decreased from derestricted to 50mph and it took well over a year for an update to show it.

I have 5 pre-sets (32, 42, 52, 61, and 71 mph) on the car's speed limiter which I set using the satnav. A push of a button on the steering wheel activates it or jumps to the next setting.

Not only is the risk of speeding eliminated, but fuel consumption improves!

Fine if you have a speed limiter. Most don't.

Speed limiters sound dangerous to me. On rare occasions you need some welly to avoid idiots. A limiter would put that ploy to bed.

Thanks for your replies Guys. Smile "M8TJT" Audio Speed Alert is enabled, so I don't know what's going on there.

"Kremmen" There is only a horizontal blind covering the boot that makes it easy listening. Wink

"DennisN" I've since learned that the stretch of road I got caught on is a notorious money spinner that a lot of OLD and YOUNG motorists get caught on, it is straight with three lanes. Twisted Evil

I've been driving for 55 years, surely I'm entitled to break the speed law once? Rolling Eyes Very Happy

As a relative newcomer to the world of motoring, you should learn that breaking the law is not to be tolerated.

52mph on the speedo = 50mph on the SatNav. Very useful on motorway contraflows.

Speedos always read high - the SatNav is more accurate.

All the cars I've owned since about 2004 have all had speed limiters. They take a bit of getting used to but are very handy.

When you got caught by a speed camera doing 36 in a 30 zone, what was your speed limiter playing at?
