A city councillor has claimed that speed cameras in his area are only in place where they will make the most money.
Labour councillor, Sean Chaytor says that his local road safety partnership is only interested in making money from speeding drivers and not in safety.
Speaking at a meeting regarding the £3.6m Safer Roads Humber receives every year, Cllr Chaytor said: "Safer Roads Humber is achieving very little. It is such a waste of money." He called for the organisation to be abolished.
Chaytor claimed that his request to move a speed camera to what he says would be a more effective position, was refused.
He stated that the refusal was based on revenue - the response he says he received from Safer Roads Humber was: "Well it makes enough money where it is, why should we move it?"
A spokeswoman for Safer Roads Humber dismissed Chaytor's claims as not true.
She commented: "All core safety camera sites have a history of crashes and casualties and are selected in accordance with the Department for Transport guidelines. We are pleased that, over time, the majority of our safety camera sites have seen a reduction in casualties and we will continue to enforce at the sites to maintain these reductions."

None, of a whole string of £peed cameras between Rawdon and Kirkstall, Leeds meet the criteria for placement. They are there to collect £££. _________________ Frank |

I believe this information is current from Safespeed regarding criteria for speed camera placement:
1. At least 4 KSI per km in last three calendar years (not per annum)
2. At least 8 PIA per km in last three calendar years
3. Causation factors indicate that speeding was a contributory factor in some or all of the accidents – sites that are clearly not speed-related have been de-selected
4. 85th percentile speed at least 10% above speed limit plus 2mph - i.e. 35mph in a 30 zone) for free-flowing traffic (excluding any rush-hour periods)
5. At least 20% of drivers are exceeding the speed limit
Those cameras can be checked here: http://www.safetycameraswestyorkshire.co.uk/statistics.htm?camera=144&type=f _________________ Robert Brady

Is that ALL, or any one of the criteria? |

That is just one camera, probably the least contentious.
It looks like the criteria have changed. All of the cameras failed when I challenged them with a FoI request and got the relevant statistics. It needed a complaint to the comissioner to overcome their repeated attempts to dodge my questions! _________________ Frank |

Thanks, I did have a quick look. The fact remains that the FoI request revealed that none of them, at the time they were installed, met the criteria at that time. Some are within ~100M of each other! _________________ Frank |
