Garmin have chosen the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to take the wraps of a new lineup of PNDs called 'Drive'. The range consists of four models, Garmin Drive, Garmin DriveSmart, Garmin Drive Assist and Garmin DriveLuxe and boast a number of driver awareness features.

All include driver alerts for hazards such as sharp bends, railway crossings, one-way roads etc as well as a tiredness alert on longer journeys.

DriveSmart adds smart notifications for calls, text messages and app notifications, voice activated navigation and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free telephone calls and Live Traffic.

DriveAssist features a built-in camera which continuously records video to microSD. The camera is also used to provide forward collision and lane departure warnings as well as an alert when traffic ahead begins to move.

The DriveLuxe features a forged metal design alongside a powered magnetic mount that supports use in landscape and portrait modes. Curiously the dash camera does not make an appearance in this supposedly top-end model.

A wireless reversing camera is available as an option for all GarminDrive models and the range is expected to launch in the UK late March with an RRPs of £99.99 - £299.99.

Interesting pricing by Garmin as the top end £299 GarminLuxe has a 5'' display and no dashcam whereas the NuviCam at £299 has a 6'' display and has a dashcam!

Wonder if Garmin will implement any of these "features" on the NuviCam as all would seem to be in the mapping data from HERE so just software changes required - unlikely I guess.

Garmin did an IP (ingress protection) version of the Nuvi & was way too expensive in my opinion. Many motorcyclists also drive tin cans & i am still looking for either the holy grail of smart phone GPS or PND to switch between each mode of transport.
As well as a lack of waterproof devices (bow to the Sony Z range) the choice of secure mounts is almost nil.
Come on Garmin, expand your customer base?

Don't know why they don't offer chargeable software feature updates like Navigon (which they own) does?
