In a campaign to raise speed check awareness, Belgium has staged what it called a "Speed Trap Marathon".

On top of the standard fixed and average speed cameras, federal and local police across 129 zones came out in force on Monday using mobile cameras. Foreign drivers, who often evade speed camera fines, were fined on the spot.

A police spokesperson said: "Speed is still the number one killer on our roads. We want to make people think, and make them realise they hardly win time by driving too fast."

This is the fourth speed camera marathon in Belgium - the last one in April checked 250,000 vehicles of which 17,000 drivers were caught speeding.
