TomTom introduced TomTom MyDrive at their Amsterdam Event on 29th April to complement the new range of GO SatNavs providing planning and review operations from the desktop or mobile application. MyDrive allows a user to plan routes, set destinations and review traffic information before getting in the car.

Anyone who has ever tried to input an address while stretched over the car steering wheel and listening to the passengers urging them to get going will appreciate this new innovation. Even being to enter the destination from a smartphone in your hand will be a vast improvement.

The MyDrive system concept is open ended allowing third parties to provide functionality to the service. Interestingly it is also quoted as being capable of importing third party POI content. Watch this space...

Obviously the MyDrive system needs a connected SatNav, and will be available on not just the new GO devices, but also on existing devices after a software update.

The full TomTom press release follows:

Use your smartphone, tablet or PC to review real-time traffic information, plan routes, and send destinations to your TomTom GO ~

29 April 2015 TomTom today introduces TomTom MyDrive, a website and app designed to seamlessly connect the car to the digital world. For the first time, drivers can use their smartphone, tablet or PC to review real-time traffic information, plan routes, and send destinations to their TomTom GO, before they get in the car.

TomTom MyDrive is launching with an innovative set of features and will continue to evolve, because the MyDrive platform is open to developers and third parties. This means that innovative driving concepts and applications can be developed and implemented in the future – benefiting drivers all over the world.

At launch, TomTom MyDrive allows drivers to get going faster by sending destinations to their TomTom GO from their smartphone, tablet or PC. As soon as the driver gets in the car, they are ready to leave.

TomTom MyDrive also helps drivers to know when to leave so that they arrive on time, because they can see real-time traffic information before they go. People can review the latest traffic situation, pre-plan routes and get an ETA based on the current traffic – allowing them to plan their departure or arrival time.

And it’s easier than ever to add favourite destinations anytime, anywhere. People can set home and work locations, save favourites and see them on the map on any device, and even import custom Points of Interest lists.

Corinne Vigreux, co-founder and managing director, TomTom Consumer said: “MyDrive launches with some innovative features – all designed to make the driving experience more seamless. From knowing when to leave so that you arrive on time, to making your map personal with your favourite places – even sending your destination to your TomTom GO before you get in the car, we’re really excited about the service. But this is just the beginning. MyDrive offers so much more – and, by opening-up the platform to developers, we’re opening-up new, and exciting, possibilities for the future.”

MyDrive is available via mydrive.tomtom.com on PCs and laptops and via apps on iOS and Android™ devices on the Apple App Store and Google Play™.

MyDrive launches on the all-new TomTom GO 510, GO 610, GO 5100 and GO 6100, and is available on previous TomTom GO models via a software update.

Anyone having any luck finding the iOS app in the UK iTunes store? Seems to only be available in the US store.

Seems to work nicely via the browser but would be nice to use the app.

I thought it might be possible to link a smartphone & PC using MyDrive but having tried it on the PC I am simply told that:

There is a mobile app linked to this account
You can manage your TomTom app on your smartphone

Import third party POI categories but not give the user full ability to create/modify/delete POI categories or individual POIs?

Now this is potentially interesting! Does this mean an SDK? If third parties are able to add functionality then how about "CamerAlert for TomTom"?

Regards,

......save favourites and see them on the map on any device, and even import custom Points of Interest lists.

They still don't get it, do they. What's needed (and not available on any smart phone) is the ability to import one's own POIs with the means to create an exact voice warning (as on my current 750GO for example). Until that happens I'm not buying one - even though I prefer the TomTom interface to that on a Garmin.[/i]

It's good to let of steam about the lack of full third party POI support on the current range of TomTom units.

However, it's better to email the top people in TomTom and tell them in your own words why you need third party POI support. I have already emailed them. So please send them an email.

You can find their names and email address is you google, they may take interest if everybody emails them! Thumbs Up

Updated my wife's tomtom go500 today and noticed in the menu system tomtom services there's now my drive , select that ,then if you enter your tomtom login details it then tells you to go to mydrive.tomtom.com with your device that's paired to your tomtom. You can now search a destination on your paired device and then send it to your tomtom .

It looks as if the Third Party POI update in the new software is almost useless. The only thing you can do is search for them. There is no facility to set proximity warnings for them, or to edit them in any way other than on the PC.
