pocketgpsworld.com
There has been a huge rise in drivers caught on two of Nottingham's average speed cameras.

On one road, the A610, 1,980 motorists were caught exceeding the 30mph limit during 2014 compared to just 663 in the previous year.

The other road, the A453, saw 8,496 drivers ticketed, up from 1,449, but they were only installed in May 2013 and were not enforced until October.

Whilst the increase on the A453 is more understandable, it's not such a clear case with the A610's statistics.

Nottinghamshire police and Chief Inspector Andy Charlton commented: "Last year bucked a downward trend. There are no technical or enforcement reasons as they haven't been switched off or changed. Possibly drivers are choosing to use the A610 more frequently as a route into the city because of motorway issues and roadworks, but that's speculation. It's a significant variation but the cameras can't generate offenders – only offending drivers can generate a number."

A spokesman for the motoring organisation the AA said: "It's a bit worrying that the number has gone up so much. There might be a lot of unfamiliar reasons that the police or highways agency ought to get to the bottom of because usually when the cameras are installed we tend not to see a reversion to speeding."

If the numbers caught had gone down they would have been a releasing statements along the line of "look how well speed cameras work". I wonder why they're not now stating that these ones obviously don't work??

It's clear that people don't understand the psychology of driving and the science of traffic engineering.
The cameras are about making money, not improving safety.

I wonder how many of these infringements resulted in revenue and how many were untraceable?

If the second the rise is explainable.

somehow the discussion around 'speeding' has ended up focussed on the 'success' of cameras (the default solution to any car / traffic related 'issue') in terms of infringements of a totally arbitrary numerical 'limit' instead of on the effectiveness of reducing casualties.

Why?

Because there is often NO effect on casualties and so 'discussing' that (a risky business for the scamera supporters they don't enjoy much) would undermined the whole myopic road safety policy linked to 'speeding'.

A77 ASC's and A9 (recently introduced) both resulted in gleeful headlines from the scamera propaganda machine about reduced speeding in terms of detection because there is no data to support their effectiveness in reducing KSI numbers.

Its a scam pure and simple.... cut to the chase with this one. Who cares about the vehicle speeds recorded? Is the road getting more or less dangerous? Whats the economic impact of ridiculously low speed limits - note that often jobs go with lost licenses !!!!

Its a SCAM

The logic is simple. The faster you go, the more likely you are to be KSI if you have an accident. Fact. Therefore, if you go slower, the less likely you are to be KSI if you have an accident. Fact. And that does not include the likelyhood of you having the accident in the first place reducing because you are not going as fast.
So slowing traffic down should decrease the number of accidents and lower the number of KSI as a result of said accidents.
Unfortunately 'they' seem loathe to post the accident rates and KSI rates to support this, just the number of people caught speeding. If more people are going faster, the accident rate and KSI should increase. Does IT? is the question. [/i]

Being the sceptical, cantankerous, curmudgeon that I am I would say that, after reading many a comment on these pages, the tolerance levels are coming down. It was always recognised that the "safe zone" was 10% + 2mph. To me, this seems to be decreasing. If we all knew the old rule and were all driving to the old rule, and if the old rule is decreasing, little wonder that infringements are on the increase.
Bah Humbug.

Edit - Oops, some spelling.

I'm sure you're right. For some years now car manufacturers have been introducing speedos that over read. First time I noticed it was 2007.

I would guess that if you get done for doing even 71mph then your speedo will be reading 75+

They have pretty much always done that, but it's only recently that your average Joe Public has had an easy way of comparing them with reality.

A point that Dennis makes at least once a week when people talk about 'inadvertently drifting over the limit'.

Edit... Inadvertently, unintentionally, accidentally, stupidly. Laughing

I would feel a bit sceptical about the claims to have done nothing to the cameras. Another theory might be that having slowed the traffic overall, there are more people anxious about catching flights at Heathrow, willing to risk getting a ticket.

Eh? Wot? Did I miss something? Or does everybody in Nottingham get anxious about catching flights at Heathrow? Shocked Maybe they'd be safer (speed-wise) flying from East Midlands or Birmingham.

Sorry lost the plot - was thinking about the variable cameras on the M25.

It's not as simple as just driving slowly, as if you drive slower than everyone else you become a hazard which increases the likelihood of accidents in your vicinity.
