Speed Cameras & POIs

I saw this app and was wondering if it was any good. Would I be able to load speed camera and POIs? Will it allow text to speach, like the actual sat nav units so it will give verbal warnings, etc.

If you're Talking about the new TomTom GPS Navigation Traffic or TomTom GO you can install & use it free of charge for a limited number of miles per month so give a GO Laughing

and see if it does what you want

Hi justclox, I upgraded to the this new GO Mobile iteration from the original one (and which was excellent) a week ago, but have to say that I don't find it anywhere as good.

You can add POI's but there doesn't seem to be a way to display them permanently on the map, added to which there is a programming error within the app that allows Google to harvest random email addresses from your Gmail accounts on and sent from another computer.

These emails addresses are imported into the Contacts file of the GO app and once there, there is no way of deleting them. To explain a little more fully, I have 3 Gmail accounts along with one for the wife on my desktop computer and the app (courtesy of Google) imported 134 out of a block of 205 addresses that had been sent from one Gmail sub account. It also imported 10+ phone contacts from my SGS4 handset because they had Google links rather than handset links.

I did manage to delete the handset contacts by deleting and reinstating the phone contacts to the SGS4 with no Google links and then uninstalling the GO Mobile in its entirety before reinstalling - a long and unnecessary procedure bearing in mind that the map download for Europe was 6.13gb and I am still at odds with TT Support over this issue.

As IanS100 has said, give it a go and see what you think, I can but tell you of the pitfalls that I have found when I installed it to my Nexus tablet.

JTB, thanks for the heads-up re the mileage counter although as the mapping isn't capable of displaying our (PGPSW) poi's I can see little point in having the map running. It's very much a case of relying on CamerAlert by itself at this time for speed cameras.

Anyone else having problems getting access to the POI folder to put custom POI's in? Think it may be since updated to IOS8.3. Have Apple locked it down again, Iknow we had problems like this when IOS7 came out

To add my pois on an android phone I had to find a root explorer that would work without rooting the phone, but it did work.

/storage/sdcard0/Android/data/com.tomtom.gplay.navapp/files/files
then I put poi file into /personal/pois.
To be on the safe side I also went up to the first files directory and then went to /data this is where the map is and I put the poi file into the map directory(Uk& roI) just to be on the safe side. Don't know which one it uses.

Start app bring up menu go to my places and the poi file is in there.

This is on an HTC One XL with built in storage so the first part of the directory structure might be different on another phone.

I don't think you can add anything to your poi file.

I don't think you can add anything to your poi file.

You can also plan a trip
1. enter destination
2. find another location, in popup choose add to current trip. it then replans.

I used it Wednesday and put 18 stops into my trip!

I think you'll find it's not available yet, same as you can't do it on the standalone units. A bit of a half hearted and useless update really Sad

I've recently installed the GO app on my 'droid phone. I had the same issue as JaTe regarding 'contacts' - some very bizarre behaviour which gives me a very long (and mostly useless) list of contacts that only a few of have linked addresses, because the app harvests not only 'real' contacts but also a whole load of folks you've e-mailed. WTF????

The slight good news is that it **is** possible to install POIs - see the posts in

I tried 'elfhelm's' method and it worked just fine. No icons on the map but at least I can search and select from my very useful legacy POI sets.

I haven't yet tried doing something similar with the pgpsw POI files, but it would appear to be feasible to install these - a real advantage given how (still) useless the TT 'search for POI' capability is. Even if you're not a fan of Google Maps/Navigation, the huge attraction is its search capability......

I haven't tried the app very much so can't really comment on its speed/stability etc but so far it seems to work just fine[url][/url][url][/url]

Actually, a bit of experimenting and......

Some (kind of) good news: I can confirm, as others have found, that the TT GO app v1.6 can certainly use the pgpsw POIs ie you can search for and navigate to them. All that you need to do is copy the pgpsw.ov2 file to the folder:

Android\data\com.tomtom.gplay.navapp\files\files\personal\pois\

on the device. If you have an sd card there might be a leading sdcard\

Custom icons don't appear to be supported but that doesn't bother me too much.

It might be that this only works because in .ov2 format the pgpsw POIs are, I think, pre-sorted (or created, I dunno) by longitude, which some folks have said is necessary for the TT app to be able to use them. If that's the case, please chaps don't change the way .ov2 POI files are made!!!!

For speed camera warnings I use the excellent CameraAlert app

Anyone tried using the TomTom speed camera alerts recently? Based on limited experience so far, running CamerAlert in parallel, TomTom has cameras in the same places...
