Following hot on the heels of Saturday's story about new speed cameras earning £40,000 an hour in Denmark, cameras on the M6 at junction 17, Cheshire have issued £160,000 worth of fines in just one morning.

Similar to the circumstances in Denmark, the M6's average speed cameras are in place to protect the work force during roadworks.

In total, 1,600 speeders were ticketed and all should expect a £100 fine and a minimum of 3 points on their licence.

NW (North West) Motorway Police tweeted: "The speed cameras on the M6 J17 in the road works are working, the limit is 50 mph. In one morning 1600 offences have been recorded".

Probably shouldn't be driving at all as average speed cameras aren't exactly difficult to spot Rolling Eyes

What is it with speeding? There to protect the workers but some drivers don't give a hoot it seems.

Should double it to £200

I think a lot of drivers just don't get the concept of average speed cameras and only slow down when they see the cameras. Even the writer of the article doesn't get it - "A motorway speed camera", "Commuters triggered the device".

Should do what the Americans do - speeding fines doubled when workers are present.

Agreed, But playing Devils Advocate, when there or not any workers present and it's just a row of road cones closing off a lane or two, there shouldn't be any speed restrictions.

In Cheshire, so that will be all the Premiership footballers whom have expensive lawyers to claim immunity or just buy another false plate.

As for speeding past road workers... Have you ever had to stop on the hard shoulder? Last autumn I had a flat tyre on the M4 just short of Reading services. I have never and will never call out the AA or anybody to change a wheel for me, so I pulled onto the hard shoulder and got out to do the job.

I got back into the van very quickly, shaking from the terror of vehicles hurtling past just a couple of feet away, complete with air blast. So I drove on the flat into the services and changed it there. Driving on the flat less than half a mile totally wrecked the tyre, but I was too scared to mess about on the hard shoulder.

I always thought breakdown services will refuse to change tyres on the hard shoulder of a motorway anyway.

Around here, on the A1 upgrades to A1M, there are very lengthy 50 mph specs zones which are enforced full-time. These limits are "supposedly" to protect workers, it seems.

But the workers only seem to work weekdays (except when new bridges are being put in out of hours), and the workforce is entirely safeguarded behind robust solid concrete barriers all down the full length of the works.

This has been going on for many years, and is an irritant.

Dales.

A couple of months ago I had to go north up the M6 to Carlisle & encountered bridge works, I was fairly early & didn't 'see' anyone working but more annoying were the miles of cones before the bridge works. The cost in cones & cone laying alone must've been a fortune.

The specs zones I've been through have all been the one wide and 2 narrow lanes type so having a lower limit 24x7 due to narrow lanes seems fair enough to me.

Only lose a few minutes off the journey time so no big deal.
