Oceola county in Florida, a popular holiday destination for Brits, sees its first Red Light Camera activated this week according to WFTV 9. This will soon be followed by nine others in the next two months. There are already Red Light cameras in the city of Kissimmee, Osceloa, but these new cameras are in the un-incorporated areas of the county. The cameras look very different to the ones that are common in the UK, but all locations will have a “Photo Enforced” warning sign just before the junction.

Prior to issuing a ticket the infringement will be reviewed by a deputy in the county sherif’s office to ensure that the car did in fact go through a red light. The evidence for review includes not only still images of the event, but also video.

The fines for running a red light are reportedly $158, of which the State of Florida receives $113 and the local town takes $45. It is unclear what the cut for the camera company, ATS, is assumably it comes from the funds received by the State. There is an appeals process but should it be found against you the fine will increase by $125. Should you be in a rental car and receive a ticket then the rental company will automatically pay the fine and debit your credit card and there will be no chance to contest it.

Although these red light cameras are not on the Disney property they are situated in the area around the resorts where many holidaymakers drive.

Does this affect the "turn right on red" that used to be allowed?

I was told last week when we were out there that some fines have been issued to those turning left on a red, even though they should not be!

locals recommend do not turn left on red where there is a camera.

The turn right on red is still permitted at all intersections except where expressly forbidden. The reason the locals get tickets is because they execute what is known as a "California Roll". The law states that you have to come to a full stop behind the line before turning this is enforced by the cameras. The full stop is designed to protect pedestrians who may be crossing the road.

To be safe you must stop behind the line then move forward to where you can safely turn.
