Being close to the Severn Bridge, I often travel in Wales and a lovely country it is too - funny, you hear lots of bewailing about weather, but it always (almost) seems to be lovely weather when I go there.

But what gets me is the Welsh on road signs. In the parts of Wales where they do them first, the Welsh words get me going every time. I have no problem with positively promoting and using the language, but don't they see that foreign visitors don't have the second language (Welsh on signs) as their first language? So for example, the visitor from France has to first recognise that the name is not in the same English as on their road atlas, then cope with the second entry to find it.

But I'm always curious to learn why some places are 1 filltir away and others are 1 milltir away?

Just you wait until Cornwall start doing road signs in Cornish. That'll be good.

I'm always taken aback when I remember that Abergavenny is English for Y Fenni.

There is a similar thing here in Catalunya (N.E. Spain), The biggest industry is tourism and the majority of road/information signs are in only Catalan. A real problem if you are wandering around a castle trying to read the information plaques and all you have is GCSE Spanish (failed) from 20 years ago.

It's the EU motto - "You don't do as I do, YOU do as I say!"
