There is a free 7 day trial link on tasker's website. Make sure it does what you want prior to purchase. It works with one of my phones but not the other.

Thanks, I'll have a look & a play - I've read a few reports of battery drain problems with Tasker, have you experienced this?

How about an automatic power after a predetermined amount of time that the speed signal has been 0mph as an interim solution?

It already does that...

Is that a selectable feature because I don't know how to select it if so.

No, it's just part of it. Not selectable. Problem is that after a comfort break of more than about 10 mins, you must remember to reactivate CA especially if you run it in the background, because it switches itself off without your say so. personally, I would rather have fast battery consumption than the possibility of a speeding ticket because I had forgotten that it switches itself off.

If it switches itself off, why is my battery still going flat and taking an age to recharge the next day when I drive the car.

Seems odd.

What is it that switches off? is it just the GPS antenna? if so, why not emit an audible warning tone every minute (user configurable) to warn that the gps sensing has been switched off?

Is it possible for the app to re-access the gps signal when the phone is outputting music. That would work as it would know you are in the car again and driving if you are playing music again.

As an Android user I can't say for sure how it works on iPhone but, for Android, it is the CamerAlert app which shuts down leaving the GPS running. I think that there is something in the Android rules which prevents apps from opening/closing WiFi/data/Gps/Bt/etc. automatically to prevent privacy breaches. Perhaps iPhone is the same?

But if you were in your house playing music, how would it know that and thus not to switch it back on?

That's a valid point but in my case, I have two dedicated old iphones that I keep in the car just for the purposes of providing music and running cameralert (dedication for you).

If you are the taking the unit in and out of the car with you each time you use cameralert, then you don't need to worry about it automatically switching on or off.

I'm trying to find a way to ensure that cameralert is always working whenever I am in the car, or my wife is in her car.

I'm less concerned about me as I know the limitations and what I need to do but the wife could do with being reminded about mobile camera locations which have now caught her twice, this time no awareness course!

Ideally the auto turn on or off whenever the device is on charge would work well. That would give it the functionality of a stand alone device that it is currently lacking.

The music suggestion is just a work around if there's no way to detect the charging status of the phone.

It might for you but I charge my phone more frequently than I use CA, so I certainly would not want CA to start every time I put my phone on charge

Fair enough but I'm not suggesting it be enforced on everyone, just user selectable. Trouble is I am told that IOS 7 doesn't support it anyway.
