New average speed cameras are due to be introduced in the latter part of next year on the A12 in Suffolk and Essex.

They will monitor the existing speed limit of 70mph.

At a cost approaching two million pounds, the speed cameras will be sited between Ipswich and the M25 in an attempt to cut accidents.

They will be positioned on a 2.3 miles stretch of the A12 between the Four Sisters junction near East Bergholt and Stratford St Mary in Suffolk. Further cameras will be installed near Kelvedon, Essex. It's possible that even more cameras with be sited on the A14 Orwell Bridge in Ipswich.

Welcoming the news, a spokesman for the AA commented: "We have done surveys of our membership and about 70% are in favour of roadside technology to improve safety."

He added that the presence of the average speed cameras "should be a deterrent to the idiots who totally ignore speed limits."

No it won't, but at least it will raise a nice lot of revenue from them.
