SPOT have launched the latest in their range of personal satellite beacons, the Gen3.

The SPOT Gen3 can send your location to emergency services with the press of a single button. It uses satellite networks so doesn't need to be within range of a cellular phone network.

Other features include a tracking function which allows friends and family to follow you and a check-in feature with which you can send a pre-programmed text or email containing your GPS coordinates.

SPOT Gen3 costs €179 and a one year service plan will cost €138.

It'll be handy when I get a bit older for the family to come and find me.

But surely they'd just look in your local? Wink

True, my life is rather 'predictable' these days, the dog knows the way. Interesting the device has a dog's name...

I have a SPOT Connect (ie a SPOT 2) which I use whilst out hiking. I have the additional tracking subscription that sends a beacon every 10 mins, enabling "live" tracking of my location. Useful for emergencies, I also use this feature as part of the "Social Hiking" community - see http://www.shareyouradventure.com/ or specifically for my tracks, http://www.shareyouradventure.com/user/profile/martin_free

The SPOT 3 appears to be a good update of the device with additional tracking options for periods shorter than 10 mins (down as low as 30 sec I think).

If you like the idea of being trackable when away from normal cellular coverage, check this device out. Whilst the cost may seem high compared to cellular only tracking options (like Viewranger buddybeacon), if you use it regularly, it is considerably cheaper per hike than your post-walk pint ;-)

OK, sensibleness [?] breaks out, but the drinking theme continues. Cheers!
