Hello,
I am about to get a new Windows phone, so I wonder if a version of the CamerAlert App is planned for that platform...?
Thanks in advance!

Hi lagerpe,

Unfortunately the largest operating systems in the smart phone market are Android and iOS. So for the time being I guess PocketGPSWorld will continue to develop the CamerAlert App only for those markets.

Windows Mobile is way below Android and iOS in terms of market share. If Windows Mobile were to dramatically increase its share of the smart phone market in the future then PocketGPSWorld would probably develop an App for it.

Regards,

Ok, many thanks Sad I hope sales of windows phones take off, to justify the development of the App for that platform...

It's a catch twenty two situation. People won't buy the Windows phone despite it being the best and most stable platform if developers won't provide the apps, My Windows 7 phone contract is coming up for renewal in two weeks and cant make up my mind whether to go for the Nokia 920 or switch platforms and go with the Samsung Galaxy S4. O2 have offered me a Iphone 5 for free but don't like Apples walled garden so that's a no go.

'best' is very subjective so I'll ignore that.
'stable' - well, maybe but iOS is also very very stable. Android is only seemingly 'unstable' (or, rather, less stable) because it is so open and users and developers can tinker with the deep-down settings. iOS and WP7/8 don't allow this and that helps it's stability.

MS shot themselves in the foot anyway and scared developers away. Shortly after the launch of WP7 devices (remember there was a looooong time from announcing the OS to actually having it available) they announced that it was dead and wouldn't be developed into WP8. So what incentive was there for developers to spend time and money for a platform had been mothballed so early in its life?

To be honest I'd say that Windows Phone 7 was, if anything worse than Apple with regards to walled gardens!

How do you put music on the phone? You have to use Zune. At least with Apple there are alternatives like MediaMonkey that you can transfer music with.

Microsoft also have rather high fences around their developer accounts, similar to Apple. We would have to pay annuals just to be allowed to sell an app (in addition to the cut they take from each sale). For now that annual cost cannot be justified.

Thanks for the info.

I was considering a Nokia Lumia Windows OS as my next phone. I'll stick with Android then :D

It's a pity. I have just changed from Apple to Windows 8 mobile and so far I am 90% happy with it. I was never 90% happy with my Apple mostly due to it's restrictions, but stuck with them since the first iphone. Four others from my peer group have also transferred to Windows 8 mobile recently, 3 from Apple. So hopefully momentum will gather and warrant an App eventually. I was under the impression that Microsoft were now offering incentives and payments for App development rather than charges?

Anyway, in the meantime, I have dusted down my old Garmin Nuvi 360 and put your speedcam database on there whilst I wait........

For what it's worth, I'll still stick to my decision and buy a Nokia Windows phone! They get great reviews and the purchase of Nokia by Microsoft should give the platform an additional boost!

Please keep considering the development of a Windows Phone CamerAlert app!

Cheers,

Lagerpe

Like wise have just renewed my contract with O2 for the Nokia 925. Have also just kicked Barclays into touch because they are the only major UK Bank that refuse to support the Windows 8 mobile platform.
I don't bother using the TT720 Go any more as the navigation software choices on the phone are far better including CoPilot live.

Having read the latest newsletter and the piece about your problems with the Apple app store, I would say that this is then the perfect time for you to switch allegiance and develop a Windows Phone app!

My Nokia 625 Windows phone is vastly superior to my wife's iPhone!

Go ahead, you know you want to... Wink

My employer has imposed a useless windows mobile Nokia on the field engineers now, I have tried some of the speed camera apps, which are useless. One I drove with on the M62 Castleford to Huddersfield section recently, has so many false locations, it never shut up!
Just goes to show how good our verified database really is.
Cameralert for windows mobile would be greatly welcomed, and you'd have no competition at all.

Hardware is useless cos they picked a bargain basement model which crashes and runs slow all the time, camera doesn't even have a flash! I can't remember the last phone I had with no flash.
