|
|
I have seen queries on this subject before but no answers.
I have recently bought a TT Via 135 with lifetime free map updates. When I first installed the maps, in July, the initial map update took so long to download that it cost me £6 for exceeding my download limit (5GB).
In August there was another map update (2.7GB) and I exceeded my download limit again and incurred an extra charge from my ISP.
2 Questions:
1.Why does it take so long to download a map change? (My broadband speed is ok for everything else)
2.How often are these map changes issued?
Sorry I appear to have posted this twice somehow.

Do you by chance have a network monitoring tool installed on your computer (such as DU Meter)?
Also, you can try to change the port setting in the desktop icon to 5000.
Further, perhaps you have an anti-virus package (like ESET or Kapersky) or a firewall hindering proper transmission. _________________ David |

Sorry David, with the exception of the firewall, most of that is beyond me. _________________ Bazzza

In the notification area of the computer's desktop (bottom right of the task bar) should be the MyTomTom desktop icon. Right click it and select settings.
In the Connections tab, change the port to 5000. Save the settings.
Also, do you have anti-virus installed on your computer? If so, which one? _________________ David |

Thanks David. I made the changes you suggest but it would only let me save the changes if I set it to "Use System Settings". Is that OK? I am using AVG Free Antivirus without the AVG Firewall but Windows Firewall is "on". _________________ Bazzza

Can anyone answer my second question?
How often are these map updates issued by TomTom?
I don't mind a couple of quid extra on my broadband bill if the update is only once a quarter, but if it is every time I plug my TT into the computer it's a different matter. _________________ Bazzza

They are issued every 3 months or so. Are you on Plusnet by any chance? If so, schedule the download for after midnight when it doesn't count towards your allowance.

I'm not on Plusnet. I'm on Madasafish which is the same company. That is useful information. I'll check on that. _________________ Bazzza

I was with MAAF too until Plusnet took over. They are a different part of the same company and I don't think they have the same off peak system. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe |

Thanks Mark, I'll ring their Customer Services tomorrow and do a bit of arm twisting. _________________ Bazzza

Hi Mark,
You were right, they don't have an off-peak download facility and no amount of arm twisting would give me a 10GB limit in place of my 5GB limit unless I paid for it which is a bit mean when you consider that I have been a customer of theirs for 20 years. _________________ Bazzza

I would look around at alternatives. If you've been with them for 20 years you may now be able to find a cheaper deal with a higher cap or even unlimited data. Or the threat of you leaving may encourage them to work out a better deal. |
