Has anybody successfully used the Travel-i Safety Camera software while also using their Navman navigation software.
I have read that it will run concurrently with GPS navigation software, but have also read that the GPS data cannot be shared by two programs.

If it does, then that will mean for around £17 I can be aware of these pesky cameras!

I was hoping you would have some favourable replies by now!

There is a 'Lite' version of this software available free:
Travel-i v1.18 LE

I'm going to install the LE version tomorrow and try it out.

Well, if you don't get any help from others, it is time to do your own digging.

I have found ouot it is possible to run Travel-i and a navigation software package accessing the same COM port, when you use some software called GPSgate. It allows you to feed the GPS info in using the same COM port, but then you create a virtual port which can be used by more than one application at a time. Apparently it does slow the applications slightly, but nothing to worry about. I think I will download the various packages to make sure that it all works

Latest is:

I have downloaded a 14 day trial version of GPSgate (http://franson.biz/gpsgate/index.asp), normal cost is: $29.95, which seems a little expensive for what it actually does.

I have also downloaded Travel-i LE (http://www.travel-i.co.uk/), which is the free version. The Pro version is £17.61, which I may ell upgrade to

Anyway, I downloaded them to my iPaq 4150 with no problems whatsoever, then proceeded to set-up GPSgate. This was pretty starightforward. I knew that my bluetooth GPS was coming in on COM6, so set GPSgate to look at that. I then selected a virtual port (COM7). I then went into SmartST and pointed it at COM7 rather than COM6. Next I confirmed that SmartST could see the GPS receiver through COM7.

Then I took a look at Travel-i. It was again pretty straightforward to set up, just making sure it was pointing at COM7 (yes, a virtual Port can be shared by more than one application!). You also have to select what alarm WAVs you want to use for speed and camera warnings.

When I booted all these applications up, it took ages for the maps to load for SmartST. This did cause me concern. I did a soft reset and repeated the boot up process. Again it took ages to load. I decided to do another reset and this time the maps loaded a lot quicker. At this point I was worried that running all these applications was going to cause them to respond like a dog!

This morning on my normal drive to work, I decided to run all the Apps. I wanted to makle sure that with SmartST onscreen, the camera warnings would come through, as I have noticed that if you are running SmartST and switch to another App. when you switch back to SmartST, it has to catch up with the progress you have made along the route. Happily the alarms came through with no problems. I have decided to reduce the range at which the warning sounds (original setting is 400m) as I was getting warnings from Gatsos, which were on different roads to the one I was travelling on. The alarm sounds as you approach the Gatso, but as soon as you are moving further away, the alarm stops.
Travel-i shows you the nearest Gatso to and its distance away. It also has an arrow displaying where it is located in relation to you (useful to work out whether the Gatso is likely to be on the road you're travelling along.
It also has a speed minder, which allows you to sllelect the road speed and if you go above it, it saounds an alarm. It is possible to factor in a percentage margin, which is defaulted to 10%.

Obviously I want to try it out more. The database of cameras seems accurate so far, though if you but the Pro version you can even use the pocketgps cmaera database as the provide the tool to convert it to the travel-i format

Will I buy it after the trial period elapses??

Gotta be a yes! SmartST is a real pain for not allowing 3rd parties to provide applications and enhancements for their product (I'm sure they have a good reason for this stance).

I would also like to highlight the response I got from the Travel-i support emails. They were helpful and extremely prompt with their replies. One reply was received at 21:30 on a Saturday night! Surely you should have better things to do at that time of night!!!

Anyway I'll let you know how things progress!

Hi,
I knew of this software many months ago but never actually used it because only one application could use the GPS at a time. Now with the likes of GPSgate it is possible, as you have stated, to use it with other GPS applications. I started to write a review but then forgot about it. Your post jogged my memory.

I have found that a setting of 200-250 gives a good distance for the alarm but it's down to personal preference.

The LITE and PRO versions come with the pocketgps_uk database pre installed.
A camera I submitted a few months ago is in it so it's a recent version.
Check out the configuration screen under GNS Database and you will see it listed.

Smart STv3 is due out next month and has built-in POI warning and importing of 3rd party POI's including the pocketgps_uk database.

I have a review of Travel-i LE here which is being updated to reflect the latest enhancements.

V3 eh? mMaybe it could be worth my while hanging on for that release then.
Any idea whether there will be an upgrade option, or will we just have to shell out the full amount to get it?

People who purchased v1 just before the release of v2 managed to secure a free upgrade however this is not normal Navman policy.

The likelyhood is the full purchase price will be required to upgrade. However this time you will have a choice of upgrades.

We will need to wait for the official announcement from Navman to confirm prices and upgrade routes.

Let's hope this information is not the usual full price upgrade.
Having been a user of V1 then V2, shelling out full price again would be too much (especially if they've done nothing about the routing !).

Dave, any ideas when we can expect to see a review of V3 after it's launched ?

Now that the news has broke...

It's a shame that navman has no upgrade offer for existing version 2 users (TomTom charged a very reasonable €49) especially as version 2 is still only eight months old.
There is one consolation in that £79 for Smart STv3 and UK maps is quite reasonable when you consider that TomTom v3 with UK maps is £96

But then is the availability of Traffic Updates and access to full postcode searching worth the extra £7 ?

I decided to download GPSgate to try Travel-i and Smart ST together.

I went for GpsGate v1.10 (Beta) which is the latest version.
Installing to the 2210 was sraightforward and obtaining a bluetooth connection to the GPS receiver on Com 8 was a walk in the park!

With the virtual Com 7, all that remained was to launch Smart ST and configure for Com 7 then launch Travel-i and point that at Com 7.

both apps got a fix quite quickly and better than expected. So off I went driving past known cameras with Smart ST in the foreground and Travel-i sat behind. Sure enough, the camera warning came through loud and clear for every camera I passed.

I assigned both Travel-i and Smart ST to a button so I could switch between each application with ease. Handy if you see a camera and get no warning - just switch to travel-i and hit the 'Log' button.

I didn't experience slow map loading as MattB reported but there is a slight delay with position updating when switching back to Smart ST from Travel-i but nothing too serious to cause concern.

I would say this is an ideal solution for anyone with Smart STv2 wanting a speed camera system who decides not to upgrade to version 3 when it hits the shops next month.

Hi all,

these two applications seem to be just what I need. My only question is do they work on the sleeve versions of Navman hardware ie:3450?

Thanks.

If the sleeve outputs NMEA 0183, which I suspect it does, then there is no reason why it should'nt work.
Download the lite version which is free and try it without ST running.
