Hi: I am looking to see if there is a new section dealing with subject. If not, has anyone used it and how have they found it? I am particularly interested in its potential use overseas without a roaming data contract. I was wondering whether the in-built GPS function with Android smartphones and tablets would be sufficient. I can understand that the phone's location is noted in relation to phone masts but assume the other functions would not work without data streaming.

Is it a case of downloading the mapping and using offline?

Thanks

Mike

Sadly Not, It needs a 3G connection to download local maps while you are driving. There is no storage on sd card option. Try OsmAnd which you can download to your phone before you travel. See my signature for a link.

Currently in Israel and examining the app on a Samsung Note tablet. Our hotel has steaming broadband speed so I signed in, using English. Much info came back immediately in English, including all the onscreen tabs, etc, but, and it is a BIG but, the maps display in Hebrew. But you do need a decent data plan. The hotel is offering a SIM for $5 a day which includes 1 meg of data, so plan your route wth wifi, so that then downloads the details, then off you go, and hope for the best.

Most "international" Israeli sites all have language switching functions but as yet I
cannot find one. Given the current nature of the roads here with many traffic jams in and around the main towns, it could be a distraction if you cannot read Hebrew.

Also, I tred inputting the address, with zip code, of a fairly large moshav (village) and it could not find it. It got near, but nowhere near as good as Google maps.

Personally, the cartoon style icons are not to my taste, but the guys have just made a billion dollars so who am I to comment!

Mike

PS. Lot more speed cops and cameras since last visit. They are currently trying hard to reduce the carnage on the roads here.

I don't think "1 meg of data" is going to get you very far

Somehow I missed your informative reply and links earlier this month. I only saw the message today sitting at a "proper" PC. Thanks for the info and I will investigate.
