I haven't kept up with any developments in Sat nav. I have a TT720 which does a great job so I've probably just answered my own question Shocked

But here goes anyway...is it worth "upgrading" to a new model...TT or Garmin and the like.... or in terms of general use just keep the TT720 ? I'm a fairly light user and not really interested in Live services as such. I only ask becuase I wonder if the likes of GArmin, Mio and so on have upped the game in any way ?

The opposite is probably true ... GPS units seem to be more and more 'dumbed down' these days to appeal to those who just want to switch on and go. I see nothing in the newer units that would persuade me to give up my Garmin 1490 Twisted Evil

Are there any features you are "missing" from your tt720?

Do you have a smart phone? (iPhone, Android phone etc)

The impression I have been getting is that there is nothing special out there and adding features is the only logical thing they can do. The 720 does just what I need to be fair and I guess the question was around what happens if it ever dies on me and I need to replace it.

I do have an iPhone and their maps have been improved. I miss my old Nokia phone though . I still have it so could use it as a sat nav at a push or even put CoPilot on

Shocked But TT have been removing features in each new model like they are going out of fashion.

So I see. I don't play music through it, don't need live services or BT...I suppose all indeed is the good old fashioned sat nav thingy... Very Happy

I know what will happen when my 720 dies on me - I shall cry! Crying or Very sad

Like you, I find mine does everything I want, which can't be said of any of the current models.

I did replace the battery in mine a couple of months ago so ill keep it going as long as I can. I suppose the growth of mobile phone sat nabs is hitting sales to some degree. I also suppose that if my 720 dies one of the basic TTs will have to do

Or a TomTom app? I've gone from a TT740 to the UK & ROI App (with CamerAlert) and haven't looked back.

The app does look interesting and I might juts get that anyway .... just in case.

I do like the big screen to be fair and the iPhone is not the biggest but admittedly its the turn by turn spoken instructions that are key as I rarely look at the screen. Could always mount the phone I suppose or put it on my mini iPad ? I forgot the iPad doesn't come with GPS on the non celluar model... ah well

I have been using the Tomtom on iPhone for a over three years. I have an iPhone 3GS which needs a GPS booster/charger mount. It works well enough.

The initial cost is offset by the fact that the map updates are free (so far) and also that as we share an Apple ID, my wife can load the same app onto her iPhpne 5 for free! Smile No mount needed for the iPhone 5, the GPS reception is fine, even in the glovebox.

We also have a non-GPS iPad. I've tried to use the iPhone via bluetooth in hotspot mode, but it doesn't want to play.

A while back I saw someone selling a GPS plug-in unit for the iPad. I don't know if they are still available, or how much they cost.

I never used the Tomtom on my iPhone a lot as I bought a car with built-in satnav. But that went wrong and I have now fitted a Kenwood DNX-4210DAB unit. Justified to SWMBO that it removed the add-on DAB unit from the side of the dash were it caught her tights!! ;)

I thought about using my old BT GPS reciever with the mini iPad...I'll see if it pairs but being Apple not sure. I'll certainly check the options in the market. Only issue is the mini iPad doesnt charge fron the car socket...not enough umph...mains only for that device. But IPhone sounds good for the app and looks a viable alternative.

Just found my old Holux GPSlim 236...still had charge after heaven knows how long in the drawer...but won't synch with the mini iPad...not a problem as I say because the iPad cant be charged in the car anyway, as far as I know

For in-car charging, don't you just need a USB socket that gives more umph? I got one in B&Q with two USB sockets, normal and extra umph. (You can, of course, get a much dearer one from TomTom and probably Apple).

See HERE
