My TomTom & Go Live 1005 Update Issues

After my previous experience a few days ago, imagine my delight to find yesterday I have more map updates to install. I should have ignored it. I uninstalled My Tom-tom as suggested above, reinstalled it and kept my fingers crossed.
And it all happened again. After three attempts, six hours of downloading maps, and the install kept falling over - and of course, no maps.
Armed with the knowledge that last time it all worked when I switched to my wife's laptop I tried again. Downloaded the map and guess what - the install fell over and no maps. I left it over night before doing anything I might regret, tried again on the laptop this morning, and this time it worked. That's virtually a whole working day in time to get it to work.
I am beginning to believe it IS a faulty unit and share Solly's annoyance that a seamless install now seems impossible. Frankly I am sick to death of it. It is of course just over a year old so out of warranty but I did break a life rule and buy and extended warranty from John Lewis. This will be the 2nd or 3rd faulty Tomtom I have had of several different models. Are they incapable of making a unit that actually does what it says it should for best part of £300.
Are many users getting this problem? Tomtom CS think it's very rare - Um! And is it likely to be a faulty unit?

"Using your wife's laptop"?? Are you also trying to do this via wifi?? IF you are then I suggest you switch to an ethernet cable direct to your router - I experienced very similar problems some time ago and since using a cable for the downloads etc I have had no further difficulties of that nature.

Unfortunately it isn't physically practical to connect my main PC to the router by Ethernet. It would need a very long cable and the only Ethernet port is already used to connect to another PC. I am one of the older users of a Tomtom and scrambling around under a desk just to upgrade TT is not something I want to do. However, my wife's laptop does have an Ethernet port and a switch on the front to disable wifi so that is a very easy way to see if that gets over the problem. I had read elsewhere about connecting by cable, using as many different USB ports as possible, not using USB3 ports etc etc but hadn't considered using the laptop that way.

BUT, Tomtom is the ONLY programme that seems to need this over the top approach. Everything else, and I have some complex software on the PC, works properly. Every month I download 50Gb or more. Nothing stumbles, fails or gets corrupted. Even the Tomtom maps seem to download OK they just don't install. And I am not alone with this. Always the common denominator is Tomtom. The other point is, I have been downloading Tomtom maps from all the way back to running the software on an HP ipaq and have never had this trouble before or at least not often. And in the old days there were simple ways to copy your maps from the PC into the Tomtom device. Tomtom CS have said they think the unit may need repairing - after all - it is 18 months old and only cost nearly £300 so that must be the reason. Um! I am not sure as all works very well when the maps do get installed.

What I have found helps is to clear the cache via My Tomtom settings, reboot the PC or laptop, and soft reset the Tomtom after downloading the maps. Then My Tomtom comes up and says there are items to be installed, and they do, at least on the laptop. I think the problem lies within the My Tomtom software. It's a shame you can't separate the process of download and install.

However, many thanks for your suggestion because it has made me rethink how to use the laptop and go the Ethernet route. I will definitely give that a go next time. It's about the only thing I have tried yet. Sorry about the very long post.

My experience over wifi was that the map would seem to download but the installation would fail - perhaps due to a corrupt file or two?? Over a cable this did not happen. TT has always come up with a few problems which other softwares do not throw up!!

Just for a change the latest map update went smoothly for me! I do get the strange delay when completing the mapshare update, but have learned to live with it and not panic.

Following these latest updates my unit has developed an obsession with pedestrians Shocked

It seems to be throwing out warnings at all sorts of random locations, several during a high speed dash up the A1 between Huntingdon and Newark. Anyone else noticed this new habit?

Not yet as I only got the latest download to install yesterday. That'll be something to look forward to.

Yes the location of TT POIs in relation to the actual sites can be a bit vague. Also the inclusion of a school in the POI category can also be hit or miss. Turn them off is the best advice.
