I uploaded a gpx file to Xpedition which I copied from my satmap having completed the walk. There were over 15,000 way points in the file. How can I reduce the number but still keep all the relevant ones

You can do this very well in Memory-Map, but it does mean downloading and installing the (free) 30 day demo software.

If you go this way, I'll tell you how!!

No need to bother with Memory Map. Once you've uploaded the file to Xpedition right-click on it and go to Edit Points: Convert to Route. This will clean up the un-needed points keeping the essential shape of the route.

This is assuming that you are uploading a track which is the original file as recorded by your SatMap. In the field SatMap records two files. A .gpx file and a RAW file. The RAW file is massive and contains huge data which can be used in Google Earth. I generally just delete it as whenever I have imported it my PC freezes. The .gpx file is much smaller but can often contain too many points. Conversion to a route solves that.

I undertsand that improvements are due to Xpedition which will make clearer the difference between routes and tracks. Simply, as I understand it, a track is recorded in the field and a route is everything else.
