Runs fine on my 3GS 16GB iOS 6.1. Never had a crash at all.

Thanks for the feedback. Must be related to the extra memory/processor power needed for the retina display of the 4.

Try it with maps set to 'Never' - this has improved stability for me.

That's what I ended up doing. Even set on "near camera", it crashed within a couple of minutes. Set to "never", it's fine, so I'm just having to get used to not having the moving map, at least until a fix is found (assuming that a fix can be found).

More info on CamerAlert crashes.

Kit: iPhone 4 with 6.1.2, CamerAlert 1.3.10 with db 11.024, TomTom Western Europe 1.13.

I can recreate the problem of CA unexpectedly quitting on demand and it goes like this:

I run TT in the foreground and CA in the background and I have no other apps running in the background.

When I enter an area where there is an average speed camera zone, I switch CA to the foreground to see the average speed between the cameras. This works perfectly until I get to the first camera in the zone and the average speed is displayed. As soon as this is displayed, within about 2 seconds, both CA and TT will quit and I have to restart them both. After I restart tme, all is fine except that CA will not show the average speed at all until I get to the next average speed zone. Cameras within the current zone are not "seen" or alerted about.

This has only become a problem recently but I cannot say that it is specifically 6.1.0 or 6.1.2 iOS but my last journey was just 6 hours and it failed 3 times - everytime being when the average speed was displayed and CA was in the foreground.

I do not have any CA crash logs but there are LowMemory logs that show that CA is using rather a lot of memory at the time in proportion to the other apps running. If anyone at PocketGPS wants my logs, let me know and I will get them to you.

Don't know about your fault, or whether this will work on iOS, but on android, if you tap the speed readout, it will start the av speed calculation. Not a solution but a way of showing you your average speed.

Yes, it does work the same on iOS.

Yep - this is the conclusion we've come to (along with lots of angry developers in the Apple forums) that Apple's MapKit is a memory hog. The fact you're in a Specs zone is a bit of a red herring. I would hazard a guess that if you pulled the app into the foreground at any time in or out of Specs then you would get the forced close (technically it's not a crash) within a short time.

For information I'm Seeing the same issue on a pair of iPhone 5's each suffer from random app quitting, but this could be related to setting differences on the map views between both phones

Hi,
I'm using iPhone 4 with Ios 6.1.2 CamerAlert always worked perfectly but now since the last Ios update it crashes (or is it just closing) every few seconds and needs to be restarted. Useless when driving alone! Is there a fix in the offing please?

Ive been reading the post here about this and have got the same problem with the app keeps shutting down after a while since the apple update to 6.1.2. I have reinstalled it and still it has to crash. does anyone have any ideas as to why perhaps??, as its getting to the point now where i have gone back to the warnings with the database in poi form on the Iphone, as that still works fine with no problem, its just that you have to keep updating the whole lot every time, whilst with the PGPSW app you only have to download the once.

Any help would be great.

thanks

Yes - poor memory management in Apple's MapKit since moving away from Google. Most issues are from iPhone 4 owners (least memory out of the retina-screened iOS6 devices) and one issue from an iPhone 5 user. Personally I've not seen it happen on an iPhone 5 even with TomTom, Navigon and gMusic App all in use at the same time over some fairly long trips.

A workaround is to change the 'show map' setting to 'never' so the maps aren't loaded. Sadly there's not much we can do, lots of developers are complaining to Apple about the memory issues with MapKit.

Hi all

Is this thread effectively closed ? The last entry was March so I am guessing there has been no further developments. Is anyone working on a fix or do we have to accept that the problem resides with MapKit and we have o to have the map display set to 'Never' ? Do we get to put any pressure on Apple to resolve it ?

I have only recently upgrade to iOS 6.1.3 so only just started experiencing the prob.

For info, I am iPhone 4, fully standard/supported (not Jailbroken) , latest CamerAlert version 1.3.10. I can unload all my apps so that I have only CamerAlert running but that doesnt seem to make any difference. It drops out randomly - anything from 2 mins to 5, but rarely more.

What I have found is that so long as I am not moving (!!) , the app stays active - its only when I am moving that it crashes out.

Cheers

This is still a problem for me.
It makes the app unusable.
