Nuvi bracket sizes questions please.

I am trying to make a custom mount but don't have the unit yet and it is quite critical.
Can someone tell me the distance from the back of the ball from the actual unit when in the mount?

Also, I am looking at the nuvi 3710 and 40, plus possibly a 2xxx unit in 4.3 screen and they are different height. So are all the nuvi brackets slightly different?

I am trying to fit into a small dash top cubby so need the smallest available

Not sure about sizes but nuvi cradles vary in size. What is constant is the ball they mount on to.
