In my experience, if you do that, Excel puts "" around everything and it doesn't work
I think it only does it if there are letters included, i.e. seen as text.

I Saved As a CSV File and got:

My bad. It was late and I did yet another bit of my not paying enough attention. If you save a file as a .txt it screws up sometimes. But MaFt's implications were save it as a .csv then rename it to .txt. That works just fine and dandy, I do that all the time.

Plan B:

Also try:

X,Y,TYPE,SPEED,DIRTYPE,DIRECTION
-1.76461,53.79522,1,30,0,0

Where all fields are present but the last 2 are just 2 zeroes

I think that the thing that we realy need to know is does the SCDB database work on the Alpine , does it show the cams on the map AND is it directional.

It appears that it's not as he said
Quote:
First, the scdb camera database does not seem to be directional, because I passed the same camera in Balham High Road both ways and it bleeped at me on both occasions.
But that of course depends on whether the cams in question are single direction.

If the SCDB database is not directional, then we are all wasting out time trying to work on a conversion from our degrees to something in HEX that doesn't work anyway. Shocked

EDIT:**************************

I have just noticed that the extract from the other site has all the DIRTYPE values at zero. This will mean that the cams are listed as non directional, so it will not be possible to tell if the other database is directional or not unless we just have an unlucky sample. This theory is supported by Robert's post quoted above.
iGO DIRTYPES: 0=nondirectional, 1=one way, 2=2 way (or reversible)

I have just downloaded and read the .pdf Operation Manual for the W928R from Alpine's web-site and the only mention of Navigation Instructions is on page 18 and refers you to the "Navigation System OM" on the CD-ROM. Does it mention on the CD how to install 3rd party, directional POI's?.

If not, I'd suggest e-mailing TechSupport at Alpine for an answer.

In the meantime, there are 6 fixed cameras around the Wandsworth area, how about making up a small database containing just these 6 cameras?. Start off with the four columns of Lat,Long,Type,Speed. (This info can be found by clicking on the cameras on the Submissions Page - The big, yellow, pointy finger at the top right of this page)

Go for a small drive around Wandsworth.

If that works, add the column for DirType (all 0's I think) and if that works next add a column for Direction, at this point all you can do is input the compass bearing and hope that AlpineTechSupport give you the conversion formula if the compass bearing does not work.

EDIT - I've just re-read M8TJT's own EDIT above and realised my mistake. Where I said
Quote:
If that works, add the column for DirType (all 0's I think).....
they should all be 1's not 0's.

But it would appear that the OP knows how to load them, but wants to use the PGPSW database which is apparently not compatible in the Direction column.

Agreed, ....to a point.

I believe, though admittedly I am getting a tad confused with this thread, that the OP has said that he subscribed to scdb and has asked for a re-fund because they are not compatible with his Alpine unit.

The scdb db includes a direction in Hex, or someother. People here are trying to find a formula to convert from compass bearings into Hex. But the scdb db does not work with the unit so why try to copy it?.

When he loads the PgpsW db, the Alpine unit locks up at times, presumably dependent upon which version he loads.

There is no mention of Navigation functions in the down-loadable manual but refers the user to a separate CD.

The Op appears to be having problems with his N,S,E & Wests, Lat/Long formats and, dare I say it, data management generally.

My suggestion, based solely on the way I would tackle it, is to -

1) RTF(CD)M
2) Contact the manufactures to see if it possible and, if so, what is the correct format (for a £1100 unit it should be and they should be forthcoming!)
3) In the meantime, start over again, loading just a few local cameras so that they can be easily managed and tested, gradually adding data to them to establish at what point the system falls over.

Sorry, if I have got it wrong, but it's the way I would go about it.

EDITED 2wce for readability.

Can you try something for me...

Import the file into Excel (or equivalent) - you may need to rename it as a CSV first.

The empty the last 2 columns for dirtype and direction.

Export it to a new file and rename it back to a .txt file.

Install this file.

I want to see if the freeze you mentioned was caused by the file as a whole or just by the presence of numerical direction values.

MaFt
I'm on that now.

However, presumably I need to uninstall the scdb database first, otherwise the unit will get confused or double its alerts?

To "uninstall" the scdb database, do I 'doctor' the .txt file by erasing all the coordinates and then uploading it.
In this way the scdb database effectively has nothing to act on?

I've been slow to reply to posts because I'm having difficulty with "Download the configuration" from the 928 (To recover my north Alert points for example). I thought it was a problem with the make or size of the SD card, but I have tried several different ones, and still get an error message to the affect that 'the download was corrupted'.

In actual fact, when I put the SD card in my PC there is no camera data on it at all, so the Download didn't work. I'm sure this is a problem Alpine Support can help with.

Anyway, it's been a tad distracting.. Smile

Let me know about 'uninstalling', and then I'll try the iGO database, as directed

Are you able to connect your Alpine to a PC or laptop in anyway? If yes, can you see the Folders and Files on the unit when using Windows Explorer or similar (not NaviExtras)? If yes, enable "see hidden files" and take a back up of the Alpines data onto the PC before you start deleting stuff.

Yes I can plug in to a PC as the In-Car 928 uses an SD card for its updates. So no prob!

I assume from your mention of backing up before deleting things means I've got the right method to remove the scdb database, prior to installing the modified iGO from PGPSW?

Sorry I've been so busy lately, but I'm taking this Thursday off work so I can catch up on this important project, do some more posting, and go out in the car and collect the coordinates of half a dozen local cameras, so we have something to test with Smile

Cheers,
Robert

You could get the co-ordinates etc. of some of your 'local' cams from the submission map, accessed via the big yellow pointy 'WE NEED YOU' finger in the right hand sidebar.

I think that GMT+1 means can you connect the Alpine directly to a PC via a lead Y/N?

How do you get the SCDB database from your computer to the Alpine?

I have had another read of the manual and it appears that the only way to transfer data is through USB memory stick or SD card, so there may not be a way to back up the Alpine system.

To expand on M8TJT's question

and what happens to the data? i.e. does it get transfered to the Alpine's memory/folders and you can then remove the SD card or does it remain on the SD card and get used from there?

Please answer these questions BEFORE you delete anything.

Thanks for your comments Smile

The scdb database has its shortcomings, the main one 'was' the lack of an audible warning.

I'm embarrassed to say that I found a 'mute' button hidden deep in a sub-menu on the 928 that has since solved the problem, but not before I wrote a snotty email to scdb Exclamation

As far as your second paragraph is concerned, your are broadly correct. I am a tad confused with GPS matters (although I am learning fast!), and hence the reason why I have turned to the experienced folk on this forum to help me, (which of course is what forums are all about - as you well know Smile )

So please bear with me. The completion of a working Alpine database for today's modern units would be good for me, and for PGPSW's membership subscription numbers generally, and therefore I have 2 good reasons to be the 'guinea pig' and do some testing of peoples suggestions etc. (I also like the idea of 'giving back' what I can Smile )

Tomorrow's my planned day-off, so I'll be in and out of the car trying stuff, and driving round Wandsworth to record half a dozen camera site coordinates so 'we' can make heads and tails of the exhaustive databases that need 'amending'.

Best wishes,
Robert

Yes, you are correct. A SD card is the only way to transfer information between the 928 and one's PC.

The operation involves sticking the prepared SD card in the 928's card slot, at which point the unit automatically reads the card, lanuches the "Collect device information" / "Copy updates to your device" page, where you then choose.

Once its finished, you remove the SD card, to answer your question.

Therefore, it seems to me that I can continuely "Copy updates" to the 928, with only a small risk of 'bricking' it. (A previous attempt to update with the PGPSW Alpine B200 database, simply froze the unit, but did no harm).

Can you think of a reason way I shouldn't update(upload) an empty scdb database to effectively erase it and make way for another (probably an amended iGO database).

Thanks for your help Smile

Hi r4robert, GMT_plus1 and M8TJT have both mentioned previously that you do not need to drive around Wandsworth to get the locations of your local cameras, they are already in the PgpsW database.

Just go to the Big, pointy Yellow finger which says "We Need You" at the top and to the right of this page and click on the cameras in Wandswoth on the map and copy their details.

But, what are you going to do with that data?

At the moment I'm confused as to the origin of the cameras you have loaded (i.e scdb or pgpsw), which cameras you actually have loaded, what the file name is, what format it is in and where on your satnav they are stored.

People on this forum are very helpful and shall bend over backwards to assist but you need to start answering some questions. As you say, you are a "guinea pig" thats because only you have this satnav and only you can answer the questions. We can only offer general ideas and await your responses and take it one step at a time.

So, you have tomorrow off to get your Alpine unit working. How are you planning to sort this problem out? Please give us a clue!
