Strangely enough it was ok this morning! Tomtom crashed twice though but the alerts worked as expected.
The difference being that my phone was not charging in the TomTom car kit and I didn't play any songs.
Even after reseating the phone to make it charge everything, including TomTom worked normally (except I didn't play any songs).
I am going to Leicester later today which will be a good test of the system. I'll report back soon. |

Perhaps navigation, music AND cameralert was enough to eat the memory.
On my old iPhone 4 running iOS5 it used to struggle with music, navigon and cameralert at the same time. Now I know Navigon is a bit more processor/memory heavy than TomTom is so perhaps the issue here is that iOS6 on the iPhone 4 doesn't leave enough free memory for 'heavy' apps like these?
It wouldn't surprise me if this is the last version of iOS for the iPhone 4 for this reason.

I'd be more circumspect about the TomTom car kit. That has its own GPS receiver which could be introducing some weird bug to the setup.
You can easily test by disconnecting power from the car kit, that disables the GPS within it. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Reset the phone again - complete factory reset as before but this time I have not restored from a backup. Instead I have reinstalled all apps fresh and so far, tomtom, itunes and cameralert seems to be behaving ok in terms of speed. Tomtom crashes sometimes on startup but I can live with that until an update comes out.
Thanks for you help. If there are any other developments I will update otherwise assume all is OK now. |

Did you try the fix suggested by 'Chris from Ft.Worth'? in that thread? _________________ Darren Griffin |

So far all the suggested fixes have not worked. However, I may have found a workaround. So far, and I've only tested it for a few days, if I power off the iPhone, then start it again and run cameralert which auto runs tomtom, all seems to be good. Including music at the same time and regular email notifications.
I'll report back after a week of testing. |

I believe I have found the fault. It was indeed the TomTom car kit as suggested early on.
I compared it to the one in my second car and could see that the connector plate was not swiveling correctly. Swapped it and haven't had any delays from cameralert or cutout in music.
I wonder, does cameralert use one gos feed and tomtom the other? i.e. are both the iphone and tomtom gps receivers in use?
I took the broken car kit apart and found the two plastic hinges had both snapped off through a few years of daily use.
I have ordered the Mio/Magellan equivalent of the tomtom car kit as it looks to have a better locking suction mount as it uses a level rather than a twist lock which in the tomtom doesn't properly lock and thus falls off the windscreen regularly unless nipped up.
Thanks for the help. |

As I understand it, any app that uses GPS will use the TomTom cradle (or any external GPS) in favour of the internal, where present.
You really don't need a cradle with GPS receiver when using the 4, it's internal GPS is perfectly good on its own. These GPS cradles came about to compensate for the weak under-perfoming GPS receivers in the 3 and 3GS.
However, they're still a good solution if you need an amplified speaker. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I know the iPhone 4's GPS receiver is perfectly adequate but I need line out capability to play iTunes and directions through my radio. There are only a few cradles that provide this. I also prefer to be able the plug the phone into a cradle and not have to plug in an audio cable and power lead, i.e. have all the leads connected to the cradle only. Thus just drop the phone in and go.
For my second vehicle I need only amplified directions and hands free. So both the Mio and Tomtom are perfect for me in all respects. Unfortunately the new tomtom kits do not have line out. |

Understood. FWIW I had a similar requirement and went with a Brodit iPhone cradle with pass-thru connector and a Kensington LiquidAux kit.
That provides power direct to the cradle and a Line Out to the car with the added benefit of a Bluetooth Steering wheel remote for the iPhone.
For our other car I went with a Bluetooth adapter for the head unit. _________________ Darren Griffin |
