Following shocking statistics concerning Scotland's A9 road, the installation of average speed cameras on the road has been suggested, sparking mixed reactions from motoring organisations.

The proposal, which has been made by the A9 Safety Group, hopes to tackle the large number of motorists who flout the speed limit on the road.

According to data, last month, almost 700 drivers were caught travelling too fast on the 140 mile stretch of road. An unfortunate number of fatalities have also been recorded, with a total of 67 deaths occurring over a four year period from 2006.

Yet, whilst organisations such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) support the proposal, commenting that the cameras could have a positive impact on driver behaviour, others remain unconvinced.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) described the suggestion as "interesting" but expressed concerns that it would not tackle the real cause of the problem.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Neil Greig claimed the issue was one of "bad driver behaviour" rather than speeding - something he felt "is not necessarily addressed be average speed cameras."

Although roads such as the A77 have experienced fewer accidents since the introduction of average speed cameras, the cost of the installation also remains a concern for some who feel the money would be better spent on engineering and a stronger police presence.

If you have a real driver behaviour problem, then no camera will fix it. you need cops on motorbikes.

The A9 is a rather unique road, bad weather, long sections of single lane, small sections of Dual Carriageway (boot it past the HGV's, only to get stuck behind another one further up the road) altitude which compounds the weather in winter, wild animals, driver fatigue.

Average cameras are not going to address many (if any) of these issues, the road needs to be widened from Perth to North of Inverness, I used to drive this route regularly when RAF Kinloss was still operational, never had an issue with feeling unsafe although I do recall having to brake a few times for stupid motorists on my side of the road travelling in the opposite direction, again I don't think average speed cameras will stop this sort of issue - Mike

I travel up this regularly and it's murder, with few passing opportunities.

Half wits in quick motors expect others to Brake, Pull Over and just get out of the way because their car is quick.

Yes you can blast up sections I've done it myself High speed for 40 or 50 miles never even seen a Deer, then the next 50 miles at average of 37 mph.

You just want to cry, that's when frustration and accidents crop up.

I have, unfortunately to late to avoid hitting it. I was in a queue of traffic ambling along 50 - 55 ish when I got close up and personal. One dead deer, £3000 damage to car.

Expensive venison isn't it? Or is the law the same in Scotland as England - you can't have it but the next driver can.

Its not always bad behaviour, but careless decisions bought on by inexperience, fatigue and impatience that this road induces?
You can sit at the National Speed limits and arrive safely, or you could sit 40MPH over that limit and still arrive safely, but not legal.

With the heavy use of speed restricted LGV traffic using the A9, there are an inordinate amount of drivers who just cannot pass these vehicles safely. Hesitation and poor judgement and its too late, then when it is safe to overtake, further delays as the lorries are being overtaken by other LGV`s, so there’s still a hold up for the average motorist, then there’s the gap at the end of the overtaking lane or duelled carriageway. They’ll use that, and Bang, head-on with the opposing vehicle or Animal on the road, and there is your frustration, coupled with misuse of excessive speed and poor judgement all in one. Is the SPECS going to prevent this from happening?

Reduce the speed limit, raise the limit, widen the roads, dual the roads. Whatever the decision the A9 will never become a road that is safe to drive on, unless the drivers can improve upon themselves.
