TomTom have chosen IFA in Berlin to unveil their Android app.

Offering all the features that customers would expect, the app has been re-built from the ground up especially for the Android platform and offers navigation, lifetime maps, IQ Routes and HD Traffic.

“We aim to make TomTom content and services available to as many devices and platforms as we can,” says Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director at TomTom. “Bringing TomTom navigation to Android smartphones is, therefore, a significant milestone for us.”

The move to add support for Android reflects the increasing dominance of smartphones in the satnav market and the number of smartphones running Android.

The app will released this october and more details including pricing will be announced nearer the launch date.

Better late than never! Laughing

But is it TOO late? Time will tell....

I think the offer of lifetime maps (a first in the UK, but already common in the US) could be the thing that will attract a lot of people though.

Piracy almost killed TomTom back in the pre-PND, WinMo days, and I'd be surprised if they have it sorted yet.

It's Android. Nobody can make an app secure

It's a platform that's unstable, unresponsive and ugly - add to that it's reckless security makes publishing any valuable product on it a nightmare, it's (current) popularity means many have little option but to risk it

At least TomTom have packaged it well with things like the lifetime maps and traffic which may bring more to purchase it illegitimately simply for ease of updates (and those who choose free would probably not pay for it either)

No we just need a telephone screen that is as large and as clear in bright sun light as their PNDs... my Galaxy Note is unusable (but when you try it indoors looks great Laughing Out Loud)

More interesting for me was those good looking pnds set for release, by the side of the android on the Ifa stand.... Mmm

Any news on what version of Android will be needed to run this?
There were reports some time ago that it would only run on ICS.
Stuck on Gingerbread waiting for Vodafone / HTC to pull their finger out.

Not really impressed with Copilot

Just as many free loaders with Iphone TomTom app.

All the retail apps on my Samsung S2 have been paid for by me.

Just hate it when everyone assumes people will not pay, as that attitude encourages people to find everything for free. Rolling Eyes

Same here, but its fact, and it is also fact there it is (much) easier to achieve on an Android based phone, than iOS or Windows Phone OS, and it's Androids positive (open-source) that makes it negative in this respect

In an event, I think I've helped lead us all off topic here... I'll probably still end up buying a copy of TT to put on my unit, just to play with!

I was lucky again to be selected for the pre-alpha testing in January. The area we are interested in is Automotive applications. Android is becoming King here. We see little affect of software piracy in our sector. It is only hardcore geeks that want to mess with their vehicle systems, especially when under warranty.

It's a pity that TomTom didn't predict release in Q4 in the first place, an earlier release would've been a bonus & credibility wouldn't have been lost yet again.

Price will be the biggest determining factor for their success on Android, aimed as competition for CoPilot & Sygic with a similar price point and success will be all but guaranteed, but double the price to £50+, as they undoubtedly will, & the future will be considerably more uncertain. Maybe they’ll do a big discount for early adopters, I wish!!

Almost certainly they'd want to set ICS as a minimum. This is one area where Google really need to get a grip of the manufacturers and networks and insist they commit to timely updates. The situation as it is is ridiculous.

Now that the first IFA photos of the Android app have been posted I've amended the news image with a screen grab from the app and added a few screenshots to thew full news item to give you an idea of what to expect.

I suspect this will be much to little much to late. It certainly is for me. In reality TT is catching up nowadays not leading like they used to. There is nothing that I can see that is not already offered by their more established (on Android) rivals. "Free" map updates are now a given on this platform.

Gerard Hines, VP mobile at TomTom quoted as saying

"In terms of compatibility, TomTom will be announcing device compatibility closer to launch. Hines told us that Android 2.2 and above was supported and that no tablets will be supported in the first release of TomTom for Android"

There's hope yet then, just hope they get the pricing right?
