We just bought a new (to us) car and I'm pondering embedding the TomTom 740 power supply again. In the last car I embedded a cigarette lighter and stuck the TomTom cable into that and the USB part popped out at the right location. I think I'll have the car supplier fit this, so it would make sense to use the TomTom embedding item. However, it appears that the new TomToms are not compatible, so maybe I don't do anything at all.

Thoughts?

Not sure I understand your issue? New TomTom's still use USB cables which plug into a USB cigarette lighter adapter/charger.

So, if you have USB in your car, or a cigarette lighter socket, either the factory fit, or one hidden in a more convenient spot, then you're good to go?

USB does indeed seem to be the common power form now. But I was hoping to be able to bury the cable in the dash, with just a few cm visible for connection. But that connector varies of course, which is a pity.

Have a search on Amazon, etc. for Universal Car Charger. They come with a multitude of different push-in-heads to suit different devices.

An interesting experiment - until you include "tomtom 1005" in the search, at which point there are no chargers at all (for me). Choosing a non-standard connector makes the newer PNDs quite unattractive.

The active dock accessory has a mini-USB socket:

Thank you Darren - I thought it was a thing you stuck up through the dock, but a proper fitted one solves that issue. I shall have them fit one I think. TVM.

[edit]

So, to be clear, the http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/products/accessories/chargers-connect-cables/usb-charging-cable/ would work with the 1005 etc, even though it doesn't say so, with the active dock.

(edited again to not be such a prat with my URL and quotes!)

Go 1000 and 1005 share the same mount. The link I gave shows 1005 as compatible.

Another option is the Brodit iPhone "ball" attached to the mount supplied with your device then bury that cable and connect it to a hidden ciggy socket under the dash, this is something both Darren and myself did with the Go-1000 units some time ago as I recall - It does involve taking the supplied mount to bits but I have pictures covering how to do this on the computer if you need a guide - Mike

I embedded a ciggy cable in our old car, but removed it. This one I intend to leave in the car, and feel that it should be done "properly" if I'm going to be happy selling it.
