Hi,
I've installed the TomTom v1.10 Western Europe app for iPad on my New iPad (i.e. iPad 3) running iOS 5.1. I'm trying to add new POI types, and I've downloaded the .OV2 and .BMP files from various GPS sites.  As per instructions I've read on the forums I renamed the .BMPs to .PNGs. The forum guidances have been to copy the POI files into the app map folders (i.e. the folders that contain the cline.dat file). I've tried two methods to do this and both have failed...
(1) use DiskAid to copy the files directly into the iPad TomTom map folder.  No luck... after copying them across, when I start TomTom and look for the POI type... None of the new ones I copied are listed.
(2) copy the POI files into the map folder of the TomTom app payload on my PC accessed via iTunes by maiking the .ipa file into a zip then opening with file explorer and copying the POI files in. Then delete the TomTom app off the iPad and reinstall it from the PC by pressing the iTunes "sync" button.  No luck... The iPad indicates that the installation failed.  It was only after I deleted out the POI files out of the .ipa that the installation was successful.

NB in both the above two methods I tried several times with differing POI files, and various different goes following reboots of iPad and PC.

Soooo... I'm now a bit stuck... and would appreciate any advice. Many thanks.

The installation was never officially supported. Perhaps the workaround has broke with the release of the latest update?

Are you following Mike A's walk-through here?

Just trying to workout if you've done something wrong or that it has stopped working (as Darren says).

I will try loading the speed camera files to my iPhone later today to establish if it's working or not, one other thought for the OP to consider, how many other custom POI files have you got installed is it just the Speed Cameras or loads of other ones as well - Mike

Just loaded the files up prior to going to work and can confirm this hack for getting PGPSW speed cameras to work within the iPhone app works fine with 1,10 - I only have the speed camera POI files installed though - Mike

I'm no guru, but from a very quick browse through the instructions years ago in my Alzheimer days, didn't it say about closing the app, but it did not say delete it after you've copied the stuff in? I'll get me coat!

Dennis may have hit the nail on the head there. If you're deleting the app each time then you shouldn't be!

The full instructions are here.

Hi all... thanks for your great replies... I'm away on business currently and I'll try again this weekend encouraged by your inputs. Some feedback I can offer based on my experience last weekend...
- I was only deleting the app when using the update payload method of getting the POI files in.
- when using the Diskaid method I had closed the app on my iPad first by double clicking the home button, holding the TomTom icon in the multitask tray 'til it jiggled then hitting the "x".
- the POI files I was trying to copy in were Supermarket petrol station locations (Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury, Tesco, Waitrose)... I wonder if the POI files are faulty... or is there something special about the speedcamera POIs mikealder used as they seem to work ok for him?
- i'm encouraged that mikealder has successfully added a POI file to TomTom v1.10 on his iPhone... Hopefully this means if I perceviere I should get it working on my iPad as I understand its the same app for both.

@mikealder, is your iPhone a 4s (i.e. using the same A5 chip as my iPad) or is it an older iPhone? And are you upgraded to the latest version of iOS (i.e. 5.1) like my iPad or an earlier version? Thanks.

SORTED... I was doing everything right except there was a mistake in the instructions I was following... the .bmp files should be left as .bmp files. I.e. not renamed to .png.

A bit of trial and error got me there in the end, helped by all the inputs from you guys... Many thanks.

Now ideally what TomTom should do is to make the app so that you can drop the POI files into the App data part of iTunes then life would be so much better.

That's interesting and worth checking out as the previous versions of the TomTom app have required POI icons to be in the png graphics format, if this works on the iPhone version then it will save messing around changing the icons to png prior to uploading them - Mike
