Our washing machine went to the great washeteria in the sky, very very noisily, today. So off we went for a new one and settled on a nice one in Comet.

When Vera got out her debit card to pay for it, the guy asked for her account number. "What?" "Do you know your bank account number for your card?" "Oh, I've never been asked that before". After a couple more tries, he managed without it.

Now that sounds to us like somebody with nefarious intent. Anybody else agree? And if so, what should we do about it? Find a Comet boss and report it?

I have a feeling it might be wise to mention it to the bank too, in case he managed a nefarious already.

He dealt with us at a lonely paypoint away from the usual multi-point tills.

I don't know why he asked for the account number, both of my debit cards have the sort code and account number embossed into the card, don't yours?

My two have only the sort code (NatWest) and one of them, for business account, is only recently re-issued.

It doesn't sound like standard practice Dennis, but I don't think that it was dodgy.

Debit cards are also Cheque guarantee cards. So, if you paid for something by cheque the shop assistant would have your A/C no. Sort code, full account title, bank address as well as as any details on the Debit/Guarentee Card.

I have a sneaky feeling they stopped being cheque guarantee cards day before yesterday (or recently, or soon Very Happy ).

I can't see what he can do with your account number other than pay money into your account. I often give people my sort code and account number so that they can pay me. All my business invoices have the sort code and account number printed on them to make it easy for people to pay.

Dennis, I think you are right to be suspicious and I would report the facts to your bank & store head office.

It might be just a lack of knowledge on the person serving you but it could be his MO and you foiled him by not giving your bank details.

He may be scamming others

I think it sounded a bit dodgy.

Agreed he can't get any money out using the sort and account details but then what if his next question had been "and can you confirm your address for this free warranty"? Straight away that'd be 2 bits of personal information that can go towards identity theft or other dodgy doings.

Why would an employee who has your card need to know about the account number? Just swipe the card, take the PI and get on with it.

I'd phone the store and ask them if it is standard practise - the receipt will likely have the operators name on it anyway and, if not, they will be able to trace who it was from the date/time and till number etc.

He typed her name address and postcode into the screen. I think I'll see if I have a phone number for all night natwest.

Well it's in my Outbox, doesn't seem to want to go into the sent box.

Can't edit my post either for some reason
