Hot on the heels of TomTom's 20th birthday celebrations last week, here's a quite sobering interview from yesterday's Guardian....
Harold Goddijn: TomTom's founder needs his business to turn the corner
Still, I wouldn't mind his job! _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Interesting, Andy.
He comes across as a nice bloke. I wonder if he really is! _________________ Anita

Nice blokes don't earn that sort of money.
Interesting to see his first ambition is global real-time Traffic - my ambition is to have UK real-time traffic!! _________________ Dennis

I don't see why he should talk about market saturation until he markets products that are 100% reliable, 100% efficient, and so easy to use that technophobes will buy them. I think I posted an article a while ago about people swearing at and attacking their satnavs. It's a device that people find frustrating in practice but keep hoping it will do the job. The complaints range from mounts that fail to reboots and signal loss. There's a lot to fix and a market of timid IT users to tap. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

People buying new ones is what he is on about. |

What I find interesting is the almost continual posts about failures in the various manufacturers 'traffic' features.
I have a Honda with a built in Alpine unit that provides RDS-TMC traffic within a minute of switching on, plus I can view traffic for the whole of the UK. It has proved 100% reliable since my first Honda in 2007.
I can't understand why the PND manufacturers have so much trouble with it ! _________________ Satnav:

I can't understand why the PND manufacturers have so much trouble with it ! | Not all of them do. My Mio 710 (or my Honda Alpine) has no problem with RDS-TMC, and as you know, neither use the questionable reliability of the TT Live offering. |

No problem with RDS-TMC on my TT 720 either. Live Traffic is, I believe, rather more comprehensive but, as you say, the reliability is questionable!
I shall be sticking with what I've got (IMHO one of the last decent TomTom models) and keeping my fingers crossed that it lasts as long as I do! _________________ Anita
