That is one of the ones that I was thinking about. And you can deduce from its title that there have been similar threads before then. All to no avail. TT are ignoring the issue until it goes away, and it appears that it is goung away for them. Only a few people are complainig out of the thousands of satisfied customers, so why bother? Advertised as UK but does not include Scotland? Still they are desperate (well that geezer Alex Wotsname is anyway) to be independent.

This has been ongoing for over 1 year now! Reduced range, reduced country coverage, appalling customer service, the list goes on.

They are taking our money and laughing at us!

TMC is not stable enough, local radio is normally out of date once announced. I generally ignore the VMS signs as they are either showing inappropriate information, or just plain wrong! Warning of long delays on M1 at J15 from J30, by the time we arrive at J15 its cleared! All this achieves is congestion on surrounding roads!

When it works correctly HD traffic is the best, however since November 2010 it hasn't worked as it should!

From the TomTom forum earlier today:

We would like to give you an update on this topic and answers to questions that you have been raising.

To review the story so far, the HD Traffic range was reduced in December 2010 due to extreme weather conditions and exceptionally high data loads. Since the question of this reduction was raised on this and other communities, we have been working towards an expansion of the range. Initially we expanded to 120km, and then further to the original 160km. We unfortunately were forced to roll back to 120km. This relates to the addition of numerous new data feeds in 2011, which have enriched the service with more detail and quality, but also added more data.

Since then we’ve been working on the algorithm of HD Traffic to make it more efficient and able to handle increased data at a greater range. Improvements to the algorithm have been released, and we can report today that despite heavy snowfall and traffic chaos here in the Netherlands the service has remained stable throughout the afternoon.

We are currently in the process of testing whether these improvements will allow us to expand the range to 160km.

There have also been questions raised about the ’40 minute horizon’. This horizon is based on minutes, not kilometers. Our research shows that traffic jams, on average, clear up within 40 minutes. This horizon contributes to accurate ETA calculation. We are looking into how this could be enhanced.

You have also raised questions about the traffic coverage in certain areas. TomTom works with various stakeholders such as highway agencies and telecom operators to offer full real-time traffic coverage in every country. We deliver 99.8% coverage in countries where we offer LIVE Services such as HD Traffic. It is important to note that there are areas in some countries with temporary or permanent coverage issues. We are working to ensure we offer full coverage in all areas.

There is a lot of work happening behind the scenes that we can’t discuss in detail. We are continually working to further improve the quality of the service.

The feedback we've received from all of you has been helpful and has been shared and discussed internally at all levels of the business. To re-iterate something I posted earlier in these discussions, our intention is to ensure that all relevant traffic data is taken into account when planning a route. Your continued feedback will help us drive all the improvements we have planned for the service.
 
I'll update you as soon as we have a date for the rollout of the 160km range.

Hello all, Last week we communicated our decision to go back to the 160km TomTom HD Traffic range. Our intention was to release it this week. Unfortunately, as some of you have noticed, we had some challenges with our traffic service earlier this week. We therefore need to delay the release for a few days while we investigate the cause. If all goes well we’ll go live with the 160km range next week. Sorry for the delay - I'll keep you posted. Kenneth

We've been chasing to get these 160km released to you as fast as possible, however there have been some technical problems and other challenges arising.

As Ditte posted a few days ago, investigations into the technical issues we had with the service recently forced us to postpone the release of the original 160km HD Traffic radius.   I'm still waiting for confirmation of the new release date, but the intention is still to revert to the broader radius.  As soon as we get more information we'll let you know.

We're happy to inform you that yesterday morning, TomTom's HD Traffic team increased the traffic bounding box to the original 160km for all LIVE devices.

We will continue to monitor the stability and performance of the service, to ensure an optimal user experience. As you know, in case of extreme traffic conditions, the bounding box may have to be decreased again. However we strive to keep up the 160x160km bounding box in times where the traffic conditions allow. Hence, please be aware that you may experience some fluctuations over the coming period.

As you have noticed the past couple of days, the TomTom HD Traffic has not been delivering messages to your devices in the most optimal way. Some of you have ended up in jams without any prior warning. The HD Traffic team investigated this and have found that the increase of the traffic radius to 160km is the cause of the decrease in quality.

On the basis of your feedback, our team reacted quickly and have decreased the radius back to the previous 120km. This is a short term solution to keep your TomTom HD Traffic experience ideal and is therefore not final! Although TomTom HD Traffic still offers you the best traffic information available, we aim to keep improving the service and are hence working hard for a better and more permanent solution.

We have and will keep listening to your feedback, which we find very valuable in helping us to provide you with the best user experience.

It seems that during 2011, despite being well aware that data volume was causing problems, TomTom actually increased the amount of data

I my experience, the TomTom HD Traffic is really the only one that comes close to doing what it says - guide you around busy streets and incidents reliably and consistently

It may not be this, or do that but it is the best we've got

I don't think anyone disagrees with this. But it was better, and all we want is it back to how it was when it was better. Unfortunately, they seem unable to deliver on that.

As I say in various places, the only viable reason for this is actually that they have a data volume constraint from their cellular contract, and they cannot change that for some reason (probably money). If I'm wrong then I'd be happy to know, but it is the only thing outside of their control that might cause this in my [no inside knowledge, semi-educated and guessing] opinion. The key is that we know that the system breaks down when too much data is active, and adding more servers would be an easy fix.
