Internet ads, how do they know?

After the week I'm having - no work until yesterday, then a job worth £62.10 but a parking ticket for £60, this morning I knocked my coffee mug off the top of the stairs and it bounced down happily, only to shatter on the wood floor effect, so I cleaned it up cos I made the mess, but pressed a bit hard on the dustpan and broke the handle, then noticed that a sharp edge has gouged out a bit of wood effect. I was thinking of washing the van this morning, but I'm terrified I might drown myself!

So any way, how do they know what advert to give you? On my Facebook profile is absolutely nothing but my name - no location, no age, nothing. So what makes "them" think that I might want to see adverts for "Discreet catheter for men"? They don't even know if I wear a dark suit!

I thought you had to put a date of birth in when signing up to The Facebook? Whether it shows on your profile or not doesn't matter - The Facebook have that data.

When you advertise on The Facebook you can choose who the advert goes to. E.g. if you are a company selling male catheters you would select your target audience eg: UK, Male, Age 60+

You could also choose other demographics such as 'people who like Abba', 'people who like shopping'. It is very very targeted from the advertisers point of view.

I dunno, it was one of my great nephews who signed me up at a great niece's wedding reception when I was gullible enough to show him my iPhone. Kids! They used to be seen and not heard once upon a time!
