Do the Variable Speed Cameras work when no limit is being shown on the gantry. An example of this is between Junction 26 & Junction 28 M1. When the gantries are not showing a speed limit I am being passed at speeds well in excess of 70m.p.h. Confused

As far as I know, they only work when the signs are activated - when they are showing a speed limit.

General consensus if that they are switched off when the matrix signs are off.
But we regularly hear press reports where the powers that be say they MIGHT be switched on in specific areas.

My personal belief is that they are active, but at National Speed Limit, 70mph. Why would they waste them? I can't see that it costs them much to run them, for the return the fines would give them. Just a man in an office presses the button to switch the speed to 70.

But how does that explain all the reports from people who see dozens of cars speeding past them, which are being ignored by the cameras??

I'd always thought they were left off when the signs weren't in use because the film would run out too quick; and it would be embarrassing to have to admit how many people manage to drive safely at 80.

But are they even film now?
They do LOOK like old-fashioned Gatsos. If they were digital, wouldn't they look smaller and neater like Monitrons?

My understanding is that that to convert the standard Gatso to a digital one, they replaced the camera and added a slave flash nearer to the first flash area. The box looks the same Here

I think they're off but the argument about cars whizzing past them means nowt. The amount of cars I see steaming through SPECS 50 zones on the M3 near me is frightening. There are clearly many who have yet to grasp what an average speed zone actually is!

Surely it does if you don't see any flashes?
Apart from Truvelos, they all still work with a visible light flash don't they?

Yes sorry, I'm thinking of SPECS for some reason!

It could be simply an artefact of inaccurate car speedo's? Driver assumes they are doing 70mph by car speedo. They are in fact doing 65. A car shoots past at what must seem like 80mph but in fact it is 75. The camera is set to the recommended 10% + 2mph so would not trigger until 77mph. 77mph in real speed may actually be 84-85mph on a drivers speedo hence we see no apparent captures.

Well I'm not saying that I:
1. ignore my speedo and use the TomTom speed display, or
2. Always drive at +10%+2,

...but even if I was, I reckon I'd still see plenty of cars whizzing past me under the gantry cameras. Laughing

Exactly !

M25 Western section frequently has speeders, whatever the signs display. There are too many speeders for them to be active otherwise I'd be seeing people slowing down, once bitten, etc.

I've mentioned before the one on the M25 just before the M4 junction clockwise. Always shows 40mph on Thu Fri due to the 3 outside lanes being 'choca' but the inside 3 are fairly clear so 50-60 it is with all the others and I've never had a NIP - yet

Thanks guys. Just wondered, as majority of vehicles pass me when I make sure I'm only doing 70ish as I pass them
