Hi,

I've got an HTC flyer with Android 2.3.4. Camera alert works fine with the internal GPS receiver but not with a Bluetooth GPS receiver.

Google Maps/Nav and everything else on the device that uses GPS works great with the bluetooth GPS receiver but not Camera Alert.

I prefer to use a bluetooth GPS receiver because it's not as heavy going on the battery as using the internal GPS.

Any thoughts on getting Camera alert working with my bluetooth receiver.

Cheers

Francis

65 views and not a single reply from support since i posted this request for some help to my problem.

A reply from PGW support bods would be good, even if to say sorry we don't know what the problem is, or we don't have a fix yet, or we're working on a solution, or at least something to acknowledge this has been read and is being looked into by support.

Confused

Sorry but it's an unsupported and untested configuration. We've never claimed it would work in this way and, to my knowledge, no-one else has ever raised this as an issue.

I'll see if we can establish the detail of why you say Google Maps works but can't promise more than that at present,

Thank you for replying. Smile

All my GPS enabled applications work fine with both the internal and external GPS receivers except camera alert which only seems to work with internal GPS, and i have to say it works very well at that. It's a great little application that does what it's meant to do which is great except work with my external GPS receiver.

When internal GPS is on it stops external from being used, equally when external GPS is on that stops internal GPS being used which is fine as i would rather just use external GPS all the time.

Just to confirm, Google Maps and Navigation works perfectly with my external GPS receiver.

Anything you could do to sort this out would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

In the CamerAlert Advanced Settings, please try to use the alternative method to start the GPS.

Also, can you please let me know how you got your phone to talk to the external GPS. Per default the Android BT stack does not support the required DUN protocol.

[EDIT] Looking into what is required to accept mock locations in CamerAlert.

My Flyer is running S-Off and a rooted version of 2.3.4. It also has fully functioning phone capability if that makes any difference.

The first things that were ticked on my device were use alternative GPS method and accept mock locations.

I use a program called Bluetooth GPS Provider to connect to my external GPS receiver.

My device paired on it's own no problem with my GPS receiver and without having to use this software.

Hope this helps.

Bluetooth GPS Provider does work for me too (when using other applications). Now we just need to figure out what they had to do to accept external mock locations. Any pointers are welcome.

........fffffffffffffff....... (Long sharp intake of breath)

Not a clue as i'm not a programmer or Android expert. Android is brand new to me as i've been a life long fan of Windows Mobile from the days of PPC2002, that is until WM7 appeared and we fell out!!..Laughing Out Loud...

Hopefully we're getting somewhere now... Smile

well, according to this

http://www.mobile-j.de/snipsnap/space/start

we have a bit of a problem.

Quote:
Why some apps are not working with Bluetooth GPS Provider
Many apps are compatible with Bluetooth GPS Provider but some are not. You might wonder why.

If the app uses the standard location API everything should be fine.

However if the app relies on the raw NMEA data (i.e. it's using an NMEA listener) or it's using the GpsStatus.Listener it will not work and currently I don't see a chance to fix this.

And yes, we are using the GpsStatus.Listener - in fact, the GPS location provider will not start if we don't use it.

Thanks for finding that one out.

Oh well....I'll have to start looking for an application that will run CameraAlert on Bluetooth. I guess they are all much of a muchness and perhaps use the same methods to run a bluetooth receiver.

If you come across anything i'd appreciate the heads up.

Many thanks again for your help on this.

Francis Thumbs Up

The issue I mentioned may be specific to my device/ROM version (Nexus One on a cooked 2.3.4). We'll check other devices to see if they exhibit the same behaviour. If you're not too scared we can also send a beta build of CamerAlert your way to test it on your device.

If you have a beta version ready for test on my Flyer i'd be more than happy to give it a go and provide some detail feedback and bug reports.

Is there any news on a Beta version yet?
Cheers, Francis.

yep, good news. I found a workaround, and the application now accepts the locations from the BT receiver. One thing you'll have to live without is the GPS status function (blue vs red icon) as the Bluetooth GPS receiver service is lying about that, and always pretending to have a location. But I hope this is just a minor annoyance.

We'll send you a beta version soon.
