New here so be gentle, when or before I upload Camera Alert to my Garmin 1490T do I need to remove the camera alerts that are already on the device ?
If yes how do I go about doing so ?

Thanks BOB

Yes and/or no...!

Garmin's POI Loader will ask you when installing the files what you want to call it. If you use the same name then it will overwrite the database.

To be certain though you can, on one of the screens in POI Loader, choose to 'remove existing POI files'. If you di this then you know that the old database has been removed even if you can't remember what you called it!

The, re-run POI Loader and install the database.

...and you DO want to overwrite the database, for normal usage.

(The only time you wouldn't overwrite, is if the first file contains different data eg a set of foreign camera data).

I think it's quite confusing now the Camera Database has been renamed "CamerAlert" too....
(That name used to just refer to the Smartphone application)

Must be getting old....

Didn't the OP mean removing Garmin's own "Cyclops" database?

I'm not a Garmin user, so I'm not the one to ask how to do that, but a search of this forum for "Cyclops" will probably find some instructions (see the "Search" menu at the top of the page).

Ah, Garmin's own database? Well, that's up to you. You can either simply untick it in Tools / Proximity Alerts (make sure Custom POI is ticked though) or remove it.

If you use POI Loader and tell it to remove all POIs it actually removes Garmin's own database too.

Sorry, maybe I was not clear, I have not yet uploaded the PGPSW CamerAlert Database, I just wanted to know what was the best way to either remove or disable the Cyclops database as I should have the same data twice for most cameras I would think if I leave it in action.

MaFt - looking at tools - settings - proximity alerts - I do not have a custom POI setting to allow ! could this be because I have not yet loaded the PGPSW database ? There is an option to tick/untick the Garmin speed camera database, but that is all.
Thanks

Correct

And when you have downloaded and installed the PGPSW, more accurate database, you will see 2 available tick boxes to choose from.

The only advantage Cyclops has is that it's directional.

I'm not sure that's correct as the Garmin POIs aren't held in a separate file but are part of the map data. It may remove the speed camera files supplied by Garmin as they are separate files, but didn't last time I used POI loader, but as I haven't tried the updated version I can't be sure.

If the OP wants to retain both then like any time you 'play' with your Garmin I'd suggest you do a fullback up first, just in case files you do want to keep are accidentally deleted.

i'm referring to speed cameras, not POIs in the map data. selecting 'remove existing custom pois' WILL remove the cyclops database - it basically removes any .gpi files (which includes the cyclops speed cams)

It would seem to me that the best option is to load the PGPSW camera database and leave the Cyclops one where it is and disable it in the proximity alerts and just tick the check box for the custom POI that will be the PGPSW database, what do you think ?
