Hi everyone this my first post as a GPS newbie...

I have been a long time user of PDAs and an iPAQ user since the very first one. I presently own the h2210 model. I feel the time is right for me to get GPS for it but after sniffing around this site find that as usual the subject is more complicated than originally thought.

I envisaged just buying Tom Tom 3 Bluetooth package (receiver and software) with the Tom Tom 2210 car kit and driving away into gps guided utopia. However, it now seems that Tom Tom may not be the best with the 2210 and I don't know what the car kit is like.

In addition I could possibly use TT3 with someone else's Bluetooth gps receiver, question is - which? I don't really know all of the pros and cons, so any recommendations would be gratefully recieved. Is the Tom Tom Bluetooth receiver as good as any? What else could I be looking at?

My general needs are as follows:

1) I defintiely want voice control (an so I'd imagine a mount with a speaker)
2) I want the system to look as neat and tidy as possible in my Mk IV VW Golf, i.e. minimal cables everywhere and looking professional
3) I would like the whole thing powered (again without curly cables etc. plugged into the lighter socket). I just want to be able to drop my ipaq into a neat mount and that's that. I don't want to have to worry about plugging a load of leads in.
4) I don't really want to mess up my dashboard
5) I might want to add speed camera detection plug-ins in the future.

It seems that the Brodit mounting system might be for me - can anyone give me any advice regarding hiding the cabling from view. How would I need to wire it and into what? I'm not exactly up on car electrics... Can one source power the ipaq and the cradle? The reciever runs on batteries I assume, how long do these tend to last?

Sorry for all of the questions, if anyone can help me with any of them I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks

The TomTom receiver is not state of the art anymore, but it's bundled with the software, and it's mostly working ok. More a question of budget I'd say.

1) What you want is not voice control but voice amplification. Check out the user mounts section - there are some proposals specifically for the 2210
2) Is that a question?

3) I thought the active mount is part of the bundle? If not then you can select between a variety of active mounts, among them Brodit or Seidio.
And you can always replace the curly cable (should it have one) with a straight one. Most of the mounts have an additional output to power the BT receiver. (please note that you may not get a cradle any more, TomTom discontinued that)

4) see 2)

5) Once you have TomTom you can go to our speed camera section and select the tool you prefer. We also have a well sorted database with these points of interest.

The receiver runs about 6 hours on one charge.

Tom Tom works very well with my wired GPS. I actually move it between cars, but it would be easy to hard wire it and loose the cables if I wanted. I am currently trying a magnetic vent mount kit, as it is very neat. the big problem is usually where are you going to put he mounting kit in the car where it is not in the way and you can see it easily. Also the location of the GPS unit is important. It will not work behind my coated front windscreen.
