At present I am using Tomtom V3 and I have just seen that for only a few pounds more than the Tomtom Europe maps I can buy the entire Navman Euro package.

Do members think this would be a good buy? I am going to France at the end of the month, so I will be buying one or the other very soon, and I would like to know which people think is the best package.

I have no real issues against TomTom but from what I have seen the interface of Navman appears to better.

Look forward to hearing your views.

Thanks

Raymond

PS Can I use the TomTom wired GPS unit Navman on an Ipaq 4150?

you must be kidding. If you had said " because of the better maps" then that would be legitimate. But most everything else is better in TomTom.

I got v1.96 of Smart ST and I must say, when I saw Tom Tom in operation, I had to get it and ditch Smart ST. I find it (TT) much more user friendly and I would actually have said from my short experience that TT had better maps. Smart ST a few times tried to take me down one way streets and also would say things like 'bear left' when in actual fact I was going slightly right if anything.

Having been a user of smarst v1 & 2 I think i'll switching to TomTom if they package a european version with full cross country routing. The routing of smarst has always been odd (albeit much improved in the latest sevice pack) and the upgrade price between versions has been high compared to other software.
Navman have now confirmed that there is no recording feature for playback of routes even though the manual says that you can.

Maybe Navman's next version will have a "must have feature" - only time will tell !

Despite what has been written above, I prefer Navman to Tomtom in almost every department. To be honest, I think it's mainly 'what you've been used to' which is the one you prefer. As to Tomtom being better in almost every department, this of course includes its cross-map routing (non-existent), its BT hijacking (legendary) among other things. You'll probably find that the one you try first is the one you will like most.

Of course, if the leaks are correct then you could wait and see what SmartST V3 has to offer. According to some reports it will eat TOmtom for breakfast and spit out the bones.

That sounds very interesting, could you point us (or those of us who missed the leaks Embarassed ) to where the reports are? Wink

I hope that among Navman's next upgrade feature list there's something to improve the routing capablities/options. I've just spent a day being routed to and fro up dead ends and round in circles that i had to turn it off. waypoints will certainly be a start and the abilty to set a preference for A or B roads etc would also help.
I'm in northern Italy at the moment and the roads that it has tried to route me through are only possible with a 4 wheel drive Jeep or motorbike!.

I don't remember having as many problems as this with Navtech maps.
Anyone else tried this in europe ?

I don’t think much of SmartST I have had it for a few weeks and it came with service pack 2 and so many times the voice tells you to go one way while the map says anther way (the maps always right) I will be getting CoPilot 5 when it comes out (I miss my streetpilot III now Mr. Green )

I have just used SmartST v2 recently in France. covered approx 500 miles driving down to, and around the Vendee.
I only encountered one mapping error and was very pleased with its performance.
