Metro reports that a 76 year old Londoner Maurice Collins has been named Britain’s "Best Collector" in a Bid TV competition.

One "thingamabob", as he puts it, that Maurice is in proud possession of, is a 1920s wristwatch-style "satnav", thought to be the first ever navigation device for motorists.

The wrist-worn "Route Indicator" is equipped with tiny scrolling maps bearing directions and revolved manually as the journey progressed. When made in 1927, it came with 20 maps and a cost of £5 (approximately £250 in today's money).

The practicality of using them in an old boneshaker is doubtful and I'm unsure how many of the gadgets were sold. I may be wrong, but I can't imagine them being any more than a novelty to show off to your mates!

Maurice's passion for odd objects started after he went "bottle digging" at a dump 35 years ago. Other items in his 1,600 strong collection include an eye massager and an electric hair-restoring comb - both as useful as the Route Indicator I'm sure.

That would be nearer £250 in today's money (based on the Bank Of England's inflation calculator) Smile

You're quite right, I did think that was a little low! Thanks Mark, now changed.

It worked for Stirling Moss in the 1955 Mille Miglia:

Shhh! TomTom's product managers may be listening. Before you know it, that will be the latest improvement to the menus. Shocked
