At a guess, and without a look at the lens unit, i would say CCTV.

The wrap round cable suggests they are temporary, has Croyden got any kind of event on, such as a concert, footy match etc.

They sort of look like camera's but maybe speed sensors/traffic counters.

Not sure if there are any events on I live about 4 miles away and was just passing through, I counted at least 10 in less than 1/2 miles area.

Saw something similar in Frimey last week but these were attached to a large metal box at the base and had an accompanying sign saying 'Traffic Census'.

The ones in your image look temporary and CCTV type but hard to say what they are for. Were they accompanied by any boxes at their base, where did the wires lead?

I think it's Traffic Census equipment.

Would Croydon be a good place to park to catch a train to the Olympic Stadium? With all these VIP lanes, and other traffic management, I expect we will see a lot of surveillance.

Edit: article HERE, but can't get the pdf map to download.

Try this document for detailed maps, and a lovely quote on what happens if we plebians dare to enter one of their VIP lanes.....

Quote:
The London Olympic and Paralympic
Games Act 2006 allows the ODA to
set the level of Penalty Charge Notices
for certain offences contravening
traffic regulation orders made for the
Games ......

The ODA’s proposed approach is
that there should be a single penalty
level for all contraventions.....

The ODA proposes a single penalty
of £200
. There would be a discount
of 50 per cent if paid promptly....

A consultation document is available
at london2012.com/orn

Hi Guivre46, Initially I thought why you would consider driving from West London to South London to catch a train to East London? Rolling Eyes
Surely, a West London Central or Distict Line tube and a change at a connecting DLR station would be better. But then I did some searching and found that it appears the transport system is much improved. The West Croydon to East London link especially.

Transport For London (tfl.gov.org) have a journey planner on their website with all the Olympic Venues listed. Enter your home post code and your destination and it shall find you the best/quickest route and several other alternatives (including some walking and cycling options!) with estimated journey times.

No, no. I'll be watching the TV with a cold beer. I was thinking of people coming to the games from the South. As this is the time it will all be kicking off next year, it looks like it is a good time for local authorities to know what the traffic patterns are at this time of year.

Edit: A substantial number of tickets for the junket have been sold in Europe so presumably some will come through the channel tunnel by car, and need to park too.
