Traffic police in Abu Dhabi have deployed a further 40 mobile speed cameras in a campaign designed to curb speeding and reckless driving.

The handheld laser speed guns have been issued to police patrols and will be used by plain clothed and uniformed police officers. Drivers caught speeding are issued with an on the spot fine which can range from Dh400 to Dh2,000 depending on the severity of the offence.

Abu Dhabi has one of the highest traffic accident statistics in the world. A sharp rise in car ownership and a wide disregard for traffic lights and speed limits saw more than 1,700 fatal road accidents.

Do they issue fines to the (extended) Royal Family, same as we (don't) in UK ?

Princess Anne got "done" for speeding ten years ago - she was fined £400+£30 costs, plus 5 points.

Apparently she thought the police car chasing her was an official escort! Laughing

And the Duke of Gloucester (the Queen's first cousin) lost his license for six months after repeated speeding tickets.

(It was his fourth speeding offence in three years and he was President of the Institute of Advanced Motorists at the time! Very Happy )

Old news.

What about the multiple offenses last week in central London. Can't think of another newly married couple who's erratic driving at low speed, illegal number plate, lack of use of seatbelts, etc. wouldn't have warranted a tug and breath/drug test by the large number of the Met present.

Laughing You ARE kidding aren't you?

There's another thing that they COULD be done for though...

According to the Daily Mail:

Quote:
At 2.45am loud cheers could be heard from over the Palace walls as a fireworks display was let off in the back garden. Party-goers whooped and cheered as red and white rockets were fired in short bursts.

I know an extra public holiday was declared, but they didn't add an extra date to the list of nights when fireworks can be legally set off after 11pm, did they? Razz

Yes and no.

1) My first comment about Abu Dhabi, I think it would be a very brave officer who stopped a member of the ruling family or security council.

2) Concerning events in the Mall, probably yes, as that road was closed; but were other streets they drove down closed? Do you think any other newly married couple would not get stopped if on a road or area of 'public access' that therefore comes under RTA ? I don't think so some how.

I'm sure the police would use their discretion in a situation like this. Rolling Eyes

Just about describes 80% of drivers I see on the roads everyday.

But as it was obviously a closed road to the public, no offences comitted.
