He first bought one over two years ago, and since then he's had 3 replacements from TomTom as they have kept failing. The last time they said this was the last time they would replace it as the 2 years guarantee is now up (eh wait a minute, guarantee should be for each unit surely!).

So anyway he's going to phone them again and kick up sh*t about it. What has happened is the screen has gone blank but he can still hear the voice. I think the backlight must have gone or something.

Anyway, he's really angry and I said to him he should ask for a brand new replacement - and a current model. Which one do you think he should ask for?

Also is this a common problem?

Legally, the guarantee is for the agreed period from 'date of purchase'. It is not extended each time a replacement is provided.

But even so, given the number of issues you would be well advised to complain about your experience and suggest they give you a new model if they want to keep you as a customer.

Batteries seem to be the common issue on x20's/x30's. Backlight isn't a common issue, what were the previous 3 replaced for?

If its out of warranty and TomTom won't play ball the easy option is to repair the broken unit, take a look on e-bay for TomTom x20/ x30 units that are "faulty" (such as This One) and simply swap over the screen as a complete assembly, would take no more than five minutes, there is information on stripping down the device available on this site should you need them.
The screen assemblies from 520, 720, 920, 530, 730 and 930 are all the same in terms of electrical connection and work fine when interchanged - Mike

No.

It's the first I have heard of this problem.

Normally it's just the battery that eventually wears out.

It's nothing to do with brightness settings and an automatic switch to night colours when the light level drops is it? I only as because [touch wood] my 530 has not had a problem with screen brightness in two years.

ccririck Just out of interest in your original post it was not clear if the same fault occurred every time the unit went faulty and if it was the original unit repaired and returned or a re-worked one of the same type.

Either way its not a good advertisement for TomTom repairs or refurbishment, so buying a re-furbished unit from TT must be considered a risky investment.

Putting things into perspective, this is one persons account of an alleged faulty unit. We don't know what caused the fault..maybe it was mis-treated in some way when not in use and not kept in a protective case. It's not like the forum is jammed full with people complaining about repaired units.

Never had any problems with my 930 which was an official TomTom refurb, apart from having to replace the battery which is normal.

My dad tends to look after things and he does have a protective case for it.

The last time the same thing went wrong but the 2 times before that it was different things. And TomTom has told him each time not to send the car charger back as he may not get a replacement if he does...

To be honest I'm really surprised he's had 4 failures in just over 2 years. I remember the first time, it was about 4 months in and he took it back to Halfords and they told him to send it back to TomTom himself. He should have demanded they give him a new one and deal with it themselves.
