We get reports on here of sad incidents of vehicles getting into sometimes lethal situations because of users not interacting with their satnavs safely. Firstly how long before a telephone app is involved in one of these? Secondly isn't it better for a user to have a real grasp of all the foibles of their navigation device from 'playing' with it?

Why should a navigation app running on a smartphone be any different in that respect?

I prefer a PND for long journeys because of the larger screens but for daily use, my iPhone serves fine as a nav and gives me the option to choose between navigation apps if I wish. Feature wise it offers almost identical functionality.

About a couple of years ago I posted a thread on this site suggesting that PNDs were going to be caught in a pincer movement between sat nav systems becoming increasingly fitted as standard in cars, and the increasing use of GPS enabled smartphones with sat nav software. I have seen nothing to diminish that view and everything to reinforce it in the last couple of years. And once we can start being able to save the maps on the free Google Nav, that will, I suspect, be the final straw.

Many people (including me) on this website are not "normal" sat nav users. We are interested in it for it's technology, not just as a consumer product with a means to an end as most other users see it. Yes a dedicated PND will almost always be better than a smartphone or car makers sat nav. But for most users the smartphone or built in sat nav which they already have will do a good enough job for them, and they therefore see no point in shelling out a lot more money for a PND.

I suspect PNDs will become a niche market for high mileage drivers and sat nav enthusiasts.

It's probably just prejudice against mobile users, who seem surgically attached to their phones, and seem to use it to make all their decisions about any situation they are in [often retailed in detail to the rest of the carriage]. So if satnav users get into trouble from over-reliance on their device, the chances of this happening to a mobile user appears greater.

That's a certain segment of mobile users though. Hardly fair to tar every phone owner with the same brush.

I own a smartphone, I use it daily but rarely for voice calls. It's my mobile web browser, email client, gaming device and satnav.

The benefit is I have it with me all the time. It's a jack of all trades and whilst it may not be the master of any, it's very close in some applications.

But it is not a replacement for a good PND which, with a larger screen, is much easier to use and more importantly, easier to see!

The "dumb" phone users considerably outnumber the smartphone users.

Not everyone wants or needs a smartphone and those people will still buy dedicated satnavs. That's still a huge market.

So, should we ask Rob to add a big "?" to the end of the topic title then? Smile

But for how much longer?

Globally Smartphones sales accounted for 23% of total handset sales in the third quarter of 2010, up from 20% in the previous quarter. And I would guess that those ratios are much higher in those parts of the world where mobile phone usage is now a mature market, such as most of Western Europe. A quick glance in the mobile phone shops show how many more smartphones are now available compared with only a year ago.

I have a TT550 live and it's brilliant.
I also have Route 66 on my Samsung Jet and it'sthe biggest pile of crap I have ever come across. It takes ages to get up and running, It's really difficult to use for all the reasons you could possibly think of. Because of this I now never use it, even in emergecies. It's easier to ask the way.
If anything happened to my TT I would go straight out and buy another.

Earlier versions of Route 66 were quite good, the more recent versions have been crap in comparison which is a real shame they used to have a good quality product that worked, these days its nothing more than a joke - Mike
