|
|
If you've ever used Google Maps to look at the aerial views of your locality, and commented on how old they may be, then this is for you.
Google have launched a new service that enables you to identify an area of interest, and receive email notifications when the aerial imagery is updated for that area.
It's a nice feature. I know the imagery of my house must be 2 years old because the bright orange kayak that used to sit by the shed is still there. And I sold it in 2008.
So if you want to receive update notifications, head on over to followourworld.appspot.com and register.

Do Google indicate at all what the typical update frequency is? And does it differ between areas (urban/rural)?
Our "new" garage, built in 2005, still doesn't appear on Maps but of course is there on Street View. |

No and yes.
They don't acquire the images themselves. They're a mix of satellite for the zoomed out imagery and aircraft for the close-in stuff. Urban areas get more frequent updates but I don't think there is a firm schedule to any of this. _________________ Darren Griffin - Editor |

Huh? I'm Konfused of Keynsham (and also Dumbo of Keynsham). Doesn't it download any new images when I fire it up? If so, why would I need to be notified it has updated them? _________________ Dennis

Nothing is downloaded when you visit Google Maps (on the web). You see the current aerial imagery available via the service.
The aerial mapping for any specific area could be as much as 3 - 4 years old. The notifications system is there to let you know when the aerial mapping for your area has had an update.
Google buy the data in form the various companies that run photographic survey missions using aircraft and satellites. _________________ Darren Griffin - Editor |

Goes to show what I know (not)! But what I meant was when I fire it up, surely it displays the latest images, so I don't need notification, because I surely can already see that my house now is surrounded by all those houses they've built this last year or two? _________________ Dennis

Well yes, but you may want to be notified of updated mapping for a specific area, or you may not frequent Google Maps often.
Either way, it's either useful to you or it isn't! _________________ Darren Griffin - Editor |

Sorry, Darren. I wasn't being off-ish. It's just that when I fire up Google Maps or Google Earth, they both startup at my home. From it, I can see plain as day, the old car park behind our house which is no longer - it has changed into a whole mini-estate of council houses, maisonettes and three storey flats which block our view of the Cotswold hills. GRRR. So, seeing that every time, I'd notice quick as a flash if more up to date images were used. I have worked out from the model of my van and the status of the runner bean plants that Streetview is two years (now 2 and a half) years old for our street. _________________ Dennis

It does tell you the imagery date in the bottom left hand corner when you zoom in. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8 |

And the date can't be relied upon, it claims 2011 for my area yet still shows things I know had gone 2 years ago. _________________ Darren Griffin - Editor |

the date on Google Earth and Google Sat is the copy write date and nothing to do with the survey date |

Have a look at the bottom left hand corner of Google Earth and you should see the photos date. Further to that you can also click on a green icon in the bar and go back to older photos. Some areas allow you to go back to 1945! |

Incorrect, The copyright date and notice is centre bottom when you zoom out, The imagery date is bottom left when zoomed in and it shows different dates in different parts of the Uk and presumably rest of world. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8 |
