For several years now, I have been accustomed to setting off those detector machines through which I walk at airports. So reliably that I try to select one which has a nice young girl searcher person, smile and beckon invitingly to her.

I've long been pretty convinced it's my heavy magic watch doing the business - an expensive lump, digtal and analogue combination, with more functions than my first calculator back in the late 60s.

But yesterday, I had a delivery to do in Birmingham to the Civil Justice Centre, where they have a load of guards and a detector thing. Which promptly went off. However, this time, I was without my watch which has gone away for a new battery, without my artificial teeth which are waiting for new ones to be made, no belt (I'm elasticated waist these days!), without my bumbag so no wallet or cash. I might just as well have been naked for the amount of metal on me, unless you count my spectacles and my iPhone.

So are there some of us who set off these things just for the hell of it?

I often trigger them but that will be because I have about a pound of metal in me.

Some seem to be able to tune out medical metal implants, but others don't and I have to be wanded and show the op scars before I'm cleared.

My father in law has to carry a card as he has two artificial hips.

My knee sets the search wand off at work even though there is no metal in there as far as I know. Shocked

I don't think I've ever set one off, but then I could count the time that I've been through an airport in my life on one hand. Smile

I always get nervous when I walk through security though (don't know why, as I've got nothing to hide) - it's the same when I walk around shops and see the security guard watching me - I feel then that I look guilty! Confused

It's a standing joke in my house, whenever we fly I walk through the gate and then have to wait while my wife is strip searched because she always sets them of.

...and isn't there evidence that weapons are now being constructed of non-metallic materials to avoid the detectors? So we are getting these very intrusive whole body scanners.
