pocketgpsworld.comIn last weeks newsletter Darren mentioned that we were working on updating the submission map and to expect it in the next week or so. Well, we are happy to announce the new and improved Speed Camera Submission Map. We have added various new features that should make the whole process of submitting, identifying and amending speed cameras a more pleasant experience. Read on for the full list of updates and features.

The full list of changes are:

  • Removed browser geolocation

  • Option to set a default country (cookie-based so if you use different computers you will need to reset a default!)

  • Changing country moves map without need for page reloading

  • Updated to latest version of Google Maps API

  • Updated to latest version of Google Geocoder (for address, postcode, town search)

  • Once you have clicked within the map area you can use the cursor keys and + - to move the map and zoom

  • Blue cursor is now draggable

  • Click on icon to show InfoWindow which then shows camera details

  • InfoWindow has quick links to change/remove/seen again which prefills form accordingly

  • InfoWindow clarifies Inactive Cameras with bright red text

  • Double click icon to center map and zoom closer

  • Heading compass is now draggable (and still clickable) to make calculating and adding the heading easier

  • Hover over icon for type and ID as tooltip

  • Move mouse over camera icon to show direction arrows (rounded off to 22.5 deg)

  • Press the 'Clear Direction Arrows' if you want to remove these from the screen

  • Map Type selection changed to drop-down list to leave more viewing space on the map

Looks good, but...

Even though I have my default country set to UK when I type in "Buxton" into the search box it takes me to somewhere in the States, near Portland.

Previously it used to take me to Buxton, Derbyshire. Can the site be amended to search only in your default country?

(The reason I keep looking at Buxton is to find out if the Specs camera I submitted on the A54 has been verified yet. One pair has but the other pair hasn't and it is bugging me).

but what if UK is your default country and you want to search for somewhere in spain where you saw a camera when on holiday?

easiest thing is to suffix it with either the county or 'uk'. eg Thornton where i live requires me to type 'thornton, bradford'.

Great job, MaFt. It was never that difficult before, but now it's a doddle and hopefully will attract even more submissions. Trouble is, I can never find any new ones in my area. Just shows how efficient PGPSW reporters are.

I also had a problem when I made a submission this evening.

I entered Thorne, (Near Doncaster.) and it put me somewhere in the good ol USA. I had to do it via Goole which was ok.

Other than that, so far so good.

Hardly ever able to report the cameras I saw with the old system - it just wouldn't accept my reports and I usually gave up on it.
The NEW system seems to be no better. I must be too stupid (even though I got a PhD when my brain was younger) to use your form.
This error report for this new version says it doesn't know which country I am talking about. I have it set to United Kingdom at the top of the form. UK is also my default and I double check the 2nd country pull down at the bottom of the form.
So I presume there is at least a 3rd place to say which country (why you need to say more than once is beyond my understanding) - can someone tell me where it is 'cos I can't find it!

Anyway - if anyone is interested there is a new mobile site in Cottesmore, Rutland outside the church. Out of rear window of the usual Rutland "safety" Van looking back towards Oakham to catch people immediately at 30mph speed sign located at Ashwell Road/Burley Road junction BUT I am unable to report it.

OK - found the problem.
The text saying check that the country is correct at the bottom of the form is not just advice to look at the pull down menu and check that it says UK (as I thought it was) but has a check box next to it which need to be clicked in to produce a tick.
Unfortunately in my browser (Firefox 3 under PCLinuxOS) the box background colour is the same as the form background colour and there is no contrasting colour for the box edge! so I couldn't see it - curse this current trend for washed out pastel shades everywhere and my failing eyesight.
once I had sussed this my submission sailed in.
Thanks for your patience.
Chris

Well, if the cap fits, wear it! I have just done the following, after finding Cottesmore and tghe church on the map....

1. Dragged the blue pointy thing to sit its point in the middle of the road at junction of Main Street and The Leas.
2. Clicked "Accept this location".
3. In Drop down "Type" selected Mobile.
4. Selected speed (130 so that Administrator knows I'm taking the Micky and won't accept it).
5. Dragged compass over map to align centre with camera position, then clicked the pointer at 67 (that being the heading for a vehicle approaching the church from Ashwell/Burley).
6. Left it showing Single Direction.
7. Entered comments "Camera van outside Church trapping vehicles approaching from Oakham directly after entering 30 zone at junction of Burley/Ashwell."
8. Checked/ticked the little box "Confirm correct country" (beside the lower country drop down).
9. Clicked Send Entry.

What's so difficult about that? It's natural progression from top to bottom and my description makes it sound a lot more difficult than it is.

Edit - although I did "Preview" before sending this, I didn't see your second post, so my "Told you so after the event" is due to my PhD in mega slow typing. Laughing
