If you do choose to accept the 'Alternative Route' the 550 doesn't seem to check the original route to see if the delay disappears so it's necessary to keep re-routing manually

Beg to differ in my experience. I've watched it re-route, then re-route back to original, several times over during one journey. It was mostly that which persuaded me to give it more credence.

I agree. I'm sure I've seen the same. After all it makes sense that just because it's found one alternative route it's not then going to stop checking for another one. I've seen the same route change seven or eights times in the duration of the journey. If the unit then found the original route happened to be the best again because the hold up cleared why would it not now suggest it? After all if your new route has a delay it would look for a better route again, wouldn't it?

I've never been routed back to the original automatically although on a number of occasions I've done manual searches & found the original route to be clear - it's possible that I pre-empted the automatic re-routing but it's good to know that it does work when it has the time!
